It’s a Lake Superior kind of day in the archives, showcasing the drama that takes place over the Big Lake with weather phenomenon. We start off with a shot from Dan Urbanksi, taken in 2001. He snapped this dramatic lightning display at Big Iron River, capturing the flash perfectly as it seems to strike in Superior’s waters.
The weather capture in 2007, was taken by Shawn Malone from Lake Superior Photo in Marquette. She managed to capture a storm passing by while the sun was going down. The falling rain, illuminated with the red of the setting sun, makes it look like the cloud above is mushrooming out of the lake. Shawn summed it up best when she said the photo "....provides for an unusual and dramatic landscape." Something the Big Lake has mastered quite well.
The first two shots were storm related over Superior, but the third photo, captured by Melanie Hakala Rossi, was done so under clear skies. She was up at the Calumet Waterworks Park to catch the Aurora Borealis display back in 2012. Standing under the stars at night, capturing the shimmering of the Northern Lights is an awesome experience, especially when you have a front row seat on the shores of Lake Superior.
Back to stormy skies for our video feature today. Holly Marenger of Pinewood Lodge Estate near Munising, captured a large storm front blowing in over Lake Superior, on June 30th of this year. Be prepared for the wind to get pretty loud if you have your speakers turned up.
