Today’s collection of archive photos are scenes that most folks enjoy capturing. The first shot is best captured from a distance though, as those storm clouds that Greta Jones spotted over Lake Superior in 2005, could quickly develop into weather conditions you wouldn’t want to be out in.
Our second shot gives the illusion of these two freighters on the same course and heading for a collision. Mona Grigg snapped this photo in 2008, when she spotted the Callaway and the American Victory passing by each other in the DeTour Channel on the eastern end of the U.P.
Then Dennis Kemper was on hand at the Hancock Beach in 2009, when the American Courage was sailing down the Portage Canal, heading from Duluth to Marquette, to load up and then head on to Toledo, Ohio and then back to Superior, Wisconsin.
Since we’re freighter watching, we might as well enjoy a video of the American Courage passing by Michigan Tech and going under the Lift Bridge. This was recorded in early June of 2009, by Tiger Holm, so perhaps this was when she was heading to Duluth, before the return trip that Dennis captured above

Great pictures and video. I love watching those
boats go under bridges. Loved this video, love
watching them go under the Mighty Mac, especially
when they pass each other. And I love watching
the go under the Duluth Lift Bridge. Sometimes we
go to Duluth and just sit down there waiting for
boats to either come or go. There's just
something about frieghters that are so special.
Thanks for the great pictures.

SUMMER HAS ARRIVED!
We never know what we are really doing if we never consider what we are undoing.

Great video...don't forget to turn up the volume to hear that hauntingly sweet sounding horn.
Summer solstice has come and gone, a bitter/sweet day.
