As a follow-up to Charlie’s coverage of the “unusual weather” on yesterday’s Pasty Cam, we have more shots of the damage that took place after the flash flooding during the early morning hours of Sunday.

The first photo was snapped by 906 Aerial Photography, looking at the mess below in Lake Linden. Note all the mud and brown water covering much of the town.

We go back to ground level for a photo of Quarry Road in Lake Linden, which goes up by Louie’s Super Foods. The damage there was unreal. You can see the road is completely gone and interesting that there was some type of “structure” underneath the pavement. Check out near the back of the semi trailers, you can see someone’s snare drum sitting there atop the mud.

The next photo is the same road, but looking back toward M26. You can see the path the raging flood waters cut through to the main road and continued flowing over it for most of the day, yesterday.

We’re in Hubbell for the fourth photo, with a major washout near a home just as you come into town. The fifth photo is a closer view of the concrete stairs just hanging in midair and the home’s sidewalk dropped down inside the hole. Amazing, the power of raging water.

The next photo was snapped by Melanie Hakala Rossi on M26 between Dollar Bay and Mason. The flood waters took out the road in the subdivision behind this road, called Woodside and then came through and destroyed this part of the State highway, making it impossible for traffic to travel from Houghton/Hancock, to Lake Linden.

Further north on M26, Melanie and her bicycling friend stopped in Mason at the bottom of Forsman Road to capture the mess made there as the rushing water crossed the highway.

Melanie took the bottom photo around the curve going toward Tamarack, just past the Dredge. What a mess strewn all across M26 there. Cleanup and repairing the roads from this storm is going to take quite some time and I cannot imagine how much money. Hopefully aid will be forthcoming, once the damage can be surveyed and a state of emergency declared.

Adam Johnson, from brockit, inc took this drone footage over Houghton yesterday. How eerily quiet Sheldon Ave. is with just a couple cars and several bikes driving through town. Then the video surveys the damage on several of Houghton’s side streets. This is just a small sampling of the major damage across the Keweenaw, from Chassell to Lake Linden. Adam described it all quite well with this statement he made on his Facebook page yesterday: “much destruction this morning... bridges, roads, houses - gone. water is powerful, but the power of this community is so much stronger.” It’s called Yooper SISU...

Some of those scenes look like an earthquake occurred. They mentioned on the news this morning that there is a boiled-water alert in Houghton.

Here is a map someone at MTU is putting together.
It's not complete but there are many more placed affected than I originally thought. You can report missing places to the email on the map.

The map D.A. shared and the daily and weekly
cumulative precipitation maps I've been able to
find so far point to how surprisingly localized
this heavy rain was. Normally you'd expect to see
much more widespread effects of a weather system
like this. The Weather Underground website
publishes a daily almanac of weather events, and
if I'm reading the data correctly, it looks like
in the 23-minute period between 3:30 am and 3:53
am, 2.35 inches of rain fell. That's an insane
rate of accumulation, and of course much, much
more rain fell throughout the night. Our prayers
are with everyone affected, but all the great and
generous people in these communities are looking
out for each other, so everyone will pull through
just fine!

Hope FEMA can step in to assess all the damage and recommend federal funding for all the reconstruction. SISU, everyone UP there!

Just horrible, I hope everyone is safe!!

There are just no words, only prayers. My
heart is aching for my home town and
surrounding areas.
