Even though the calendar says that summer begins in June, the last weekend in May usually signals the beginning of many summer activities. Today’s archive and current shots show that off quite well, starting back in 2011 with a photo Charlie Hopper took at the Vansville Bar in Phoenix. The Keweenaw ATV Club held an event there, complete with food and music, to raise money for its project to help extend and enhance the trails from Keweenaw Point to the Houghton County line.

In 2013, I joined some friends on a hike to the Hungarian Falls, enjoying the company and the scenery. The photo was taken at the uppermost falls, which is now part of the Keweenaw Land Trust so it will be preserved for future generations to have the opportunity to hike the trails and view the falls along the way.

Laurie Bashaw and two of her grandchildren were on the shores of Lake Superior at Marquette Harbor in 2014. What an odd looking scene, to see kids in shorts and t-shirts while there is still plenty of ice floating around on the Big Lake. That year was definitely an unusual year for the ice coverage on Superior.

The ice has been gone for a few weeks this year, but it also hung on into May. Our bottom photo comes from Linda Schneller, who along with her hubby, Joe, launched their Pontoon Boat, the “Josie Kay” over the weekend to officially start the boating season in Bootjack. Looks like their passengers were enjoying the ride.

Our video feature today is taking us cruising, too, on the Portage Canal. Tiger Holm took a ride on the Ranger III back in 2014, as it cruiser along on the Canal. Strap on your life-jacket and prepare to get underway!

want to make the walk with my knees anymore. And
