Happy Memorial Day! Remember to fly your flag today, in honor of those who have died for our Freedom. Looking back in our archives on this day, we had several photos to honor those who’ve given their all. In 2007, Z-Man shared the top photo. The gun with the soldier’s helmet hung on it, symbolizes a fallen comrade's ultimate sacrifice, which makes this the perfect photo for today.
Then in 2012, Donna MacIntosh shared two photos of the Iwo Jima Memorial Float that had been in the Baraga on display. This reproduction of the flag raising at Iwo Jima, was made by George McNeil, from Baraga, who while serving in the Pacific, was an eye witness to this very scene. The Keweenaw Detachment of the Marine Corps League, is now in charge of maintaining and displaying this reproduction both in parades and other community events.
Many people get a bit confused about the military holidays we celebrate here in the U.S. and who they honor, so I thought I’d add a little refresher for folks.
Armed Forces Day – held on the third Saturday of each May, is to honor those serving at present.
Memorial Day – held on the last Monday of each May, is to remember those who died while serving.
Veterans Day – held on the 11th day of each November, is to honor those who have served.
Our video today is from A Memorial Day Service at Bakkala Cemetery near Gwinn, Michigan, back in 2007. If you can’t get to a service today, this is the next best thing to being there. Thank you to all those who made the ultimate sacrifice and to their family and friends.
