Today’s archive photos take a look at some familiar folks here in the Keweenaw, beginning with one that isn’t really a person, but a replica of one, the “Houghton Miner” statue. Taka Aoki snapped this photo back in 2003 and had an encounter with the Houghton Police at the same time. They thought he had passed out by the miner statue, since he was laying there on the ground to get this shot. What a photographer does to get the perfect shot.

Then in 2008, an anonymous photographer snapped this photo of our own Webmaster, Charlie Hopper up on top a roof, surveying the horizon - a portion of the procedure in getting a residence hooked up with Pasty.NET Internet Service. That has been a big part of Charlie’s job here at Pasty Central, climbing up on rooftops, towers, anywhere up high to scout out the lay of the land in the wireless set-up process. He’s been in some high places around the Copper Country.

Brenda Leigh and friends were getting started on a camping adventure back in 2012, when they had a blow out flat tire on their vehicle. The women tried to change the tire, but were unsuccessful in getting the rusted spare tire loosened, so they just headed out on their 3 day, 23 mile hike from the Two Hearted River to the Tahquamenon Falls, with camping out along the way. They dealt with that “blow out” upon their return.

We’re going Keweenaw Exploring in our video today. Revisiting the Redridge Dam in Freda and then over the Portage Lift Bridge, too. Enjoy the view!

Wow...these are wild pix, man!
2003 looks like a signal for aliens.
2008 looks like Sir Charles is on the lookout for the aliens.
2012 looks like the aliens landed right on the back of that van and blew out the tires.
That's my story and I'm stick'n to it.
"Wild thing, you make my heart sing, you make everything...grooooovvvaaaa." (The Troggs, man)
Nice drone video as well.

What is that plant growing around the miners statue? Is it asparagus?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, May 21, 2018 - 06:58 pm:

John Mich ~

We always called it Indian scrub brush plant. It's
segmented and very fibrous. I haven't been able to
find the real name.

Looks like it is Equisetum, or by the common name, Horsetail.

That's it Gary!

Thanks for educating me on the true name ~ on our
property in Antrim County it never 'branched out'
like the pictures related to horsetail. It just grew
in the tall 'pipe cleaner' type structure.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 - 12:10 pm:

Just found that the variety that we had is Equisetum
laevigatum, Common Name: SMOOTH SCOURING RUSH

Thanks again Gary!

The silica content in the cell walls render it useful in scrubbing. You were on the right track.
