Still looking at snow some years in our archives... in the beginning of May, but that is quickly coming to an end. There actually isn’t much snow showing in the photo from Taka Aoki back in 2003, just a few patches on the right side of the falls. This is where Taka’s camera took a big drink, when it dropped into Jacob’s Falls here and wasn’t working anymore. He wasn’t sure when he’d be able to replace it and send more photos to share, but he was actually quite lucky, as just a couple days later he sent in another photo and said he was able to get the camera working again.
Our 2007 photo, snapped by Aladino Mandoli, shows a different ice cover in Marquette Harbor that year, with some NMU students trying their hand (and feet) at wind surfing on the ice pack there. Even with the sunshine, I bet it was a bit chilly standing around on the ice like that, but I don’t think college kids feel the chill like the rest of us.
Fast forward to the present and we have a shot of the Big Traverse Pier, taken by Judy Schaefer about 2 weeks ago. Check out the icy covering on the pier light and built up on the pier. The temperatures just were not warming up for us.
But then toward the end of last week and over the weekend, the sun was shining and the temperatures warmed up. The fourth photo is how Brita Haapala found the Big Traverse River on Sunday... ice free and flowing. We don’t have a photo of the pier from Sunday, but I was out there on my bike and saw no ice on the pier, with some still hanging on to the shoreline. What a difference just a few days can make in the Spring here UP North.
We head back to Jacob’s Falls for our video treat today. This was taken about a year ago and although the sun was shining that day, too, it looks like there was still a bit of snow hanging on around the falls. You just never know what Spring will bring for weather around these parts.

Enjoyed the video today. There is nothing more soothing to my soul than the sight and the sound of a waterfall.

Think all you speak,
but do not speak all that you think.
A useful twist on the concept of "think before you speak"

I so love hearing the roar of waterfalls and the
splash of Superior waves. I never tire of it!
