The archive theme today is always a good one. Beautiful and interesting scenes around the U.P. in Spring. A photo taken by Karl Johnson in 2002 starts us out. He was at the Calumet Waterworks Park while the Big Lake was splashing and crashing on the concrete wall there. Looks like Lake Superior was all stirred up that day.
Then in 2010, Joe Kirkish takes us on a drive along the covered road near Freda, only this time of year, it’s actually the UNcovered road until the leaves begin to sprout for the year again. Even without the leaves creating a canopy overhead, you still get the tunneling affect with the closely spaced trees alongside the road.
Back to snow in 2013, where Melanie Hakala Rossi found some interesting tracks in the snow. After further investigation, she found it was actually a tunnel made by a chipmunk to get to her feeders undetected. Well, he thought he was being secretive, but Melanie figured him out. After all that work getting there, he deserved a snack of sunflower seeds.
Our current photo today is quite the scenic one, from Taana Kalliainen. Taana has a great view of the Lower Entry and couldn’t resist capturing this interesting morning sky. She snapped it a week ago, so I’m not sure what the ice in the waterway looks like right now, but I do know that Chassell Bay was still ice covered on Monday, with fishing shanties still out there, too.
In my search for a possible chipmunk tunnel in action video, I found today’s feature that really made me chuckle. The people making the video were having a good laugh, too, watching a squirrel that was “drunk” from eating too many fermented crabapples. Guess he should have had a designated tree climber that day.

2018 is ethereal and the next time I get pulled over by the police, I can say; "Blame it on the crabapples."
