We start off today with just one archive photo, taken back in 2006 by Greta Jones. She was out Freighter spotting and captured this one making a run on Lake Superior. If you look close off the stern of the boat, you can just make out the white of the Pilot House of another freighter in the distance. Perhaps these two boats were running a race.

Speaking of a race, that brings us to the current photos we have here today, sent in by Dorothy Jamison, the Certified Athletic Trainer for the local area school athletic teams. She was on hand this past Thursday in Calumet, where the boys track held their first annual Snow Meet on the CHS Track. They had to have a snowblower clear the track for the events, as you can see in the first two photos how deep the snow is on both sides of the actual track. Regular track events were held, such as the Football Field Dash, Snowbank High Jump and Snow Mound Hurdles. The kids had a blast and participated in something they won’t soon forget, in fact I bet they’ll be someday telling their kids about the day they held their Track and Field event with snowbanks taller than them in spots. The last photo shows the Calumet Copper Kings Boys Track Team.

Our video takes us live to the Calumet Snow Meet, with the Snowbank High Jump, courtesy of Arnie Kinninen who was there video taping some of the events. Note this Calumet High Jumper is in stocking feet. Most of the kids were wearing boots for this fun event that got them out of the gym, so they either went in their socks or barefeet, so they could make the approach to the snowbank better. Talk about Yooper ingenuity...when the snow blankets your track, you make a fun event for the team!

Wow. Just wow! The high schoolers finally were
able to get out for track, softball and baseball.
What an awfully long winter. I sure do hope that
summer lasts as long. Wishful thinking, I'm sure.

I'd rather have snow in May than the heat & humidity
in Florida!
