Today’s archive photos are all about Spring. All three older shots are showing the melting beginning and the snow disappearing. Starting with a photo from Nate Alwine snapped back in 2005 at Piers Gorge in Dickinson County. The rapids are running pretty good in the photo and with the sunshine the snow was on the melt, too.

Then in 2006, Katie Keranen was at Marquette Harbor, just across from the Lighthouse there. It looks like most of the snow had melted and the ice along the shoreline was gone, too. Spring had sprung that year!

Jumping ahead to 2011, we have a photo looking at the L’Anse waterfront, taken by Donna MacIntosh. Still a little ice along the shoreline on Keweenaw Bay and some floes out in the Bay, too, but the waterfront park looks to be bare of snow that year.

So that concludes Spring here UP North...we’ve been getting cold temperatures, wind and snow for the past week, in various places around the U.P. Today’s current photo was snapped by Brenda Leigh on Easter Sunday in the Brimley area. Brenda commented that, “The Coast Guard has cut a path for the lake freighter traffic which started on March 25. It is amazing the size of these ice pieces. The shove on the left is about fifty feet high. In the background is Gros Cap Canada.”

Take a ride along with a Coast Guard Cutter on the St. Mary’s River, which connects Lake Superior to the other Great Lakes. Breaking up the ice is an all day, every day job this time of year on the Big Lake.

Had just seen a story about ice shoves and the damage
they were doing to some cottages. Hope the insurance
covers it!

Nice to see the spring pictures and what happens
when the snow starts to melt. It is so cold out
here in MN that it feels like January. It feels
as if spring is never going to come this year.

Still windy here today and it is not chilly, it is downright cold. Spring seems to be a little more reluctant to arrive this year. Flowing rivers and chirping birds are what I long for.

Seriously?!!

It's 17 this morning! This is crazy!

Global Warming!!!!!

By Duane P. (Islandman43) on Sunday, April 8, 2018 - 09:45 am:

It is almost 10 o'clock in the morning and it is 6 degrees in Ishpeming. Spring can show up any day now.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, April 8, 2018 - 10:28 am:

FJL, that's what we say all the time too. I'd
like to see some global warming, actually!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Sunday, April 8, 2018 - 01:14 pm:

Amen, FJL (Langoman)! But just remember, now they
have changed it to "Climate Change" because of times
like these!

We saw the Coast Guard ice cutter hard at word at the Soo as we
were crossing the bridge yesterday morning. We saw three
freighters: one waiting to lock through, one just leaving the lock
and the third heading away. What a sight!
