Here UP North, when April rolls around, our thoughts turn to melting snow and ice...spring thaw to be exact. Some years, that’s the case for us Yoopers, other years, not so much. Starting back in 2000, with a photo from Scott Lyon, the then Principal of the Elm River Township Schools who shared the entire student body at that time, we can see some snow around still. It looks like maybe there had been a fresh snowfall that same day, but mostly melted in the parking lot. I wonder how many students they have now at this small rural school in the Toivola area?

The 2002 photo was snapped by Charlie Hopper in Eagle River…Alaska! His daughter Becky was on the Michigan Tech Women’s Hockey team which was playing in the National Women’s Hockey Tournament there, so Charlie and Edie followed the team, too. Back home we still had snow on the ground, but it was melting by now that year.

Then we meet up with Ashlee Harvey and her family on the shores of Lake Superior at Esrey Park in 2007. From their bare hands and hatless heads, it looks like it was warming up, but check out the ice on the shoreline there. It looks like it’s all broken into pieces, clear and shiny like crystals. I bet the waves washing them to shore set off a neat clinking sound, too!

The melting this year, has been starting and stopping and then snowing more. This past weekend, a good portion of the U.P. received a fresh covering of snow... some places 10” or more. Fred Koski shared this photo Sunday, titled April Fool! The joke is on us Yoopers for thinking it was Spring!

To restore some hope to all of us who are looking at inches upon inches of snow still on the ground, we have a ‘Spring thaw begins’ video recorded in 2013. I love the sound of the running water throughout

Yesterday is history.
Tomorrow is a mystery.
Today is a gift.
That's why we call it "the present".

Good morning from MN!! Very nice winter pictures
today. It is 5 degrees here and we probably got
4" over the weekend into the start of the week. I
guess we're skipping spring again this year.

Have a great day!

We are getting the lake effect snow but nothing like
Fred got; and not as cold as Deb! It would be
wonderful to have a nice gradual warm-up for Spring
this year but not a degree every week! The thaw is
coming one of these days!
