Another month has come and gone and we’re already into April, wow! Our look back into the archives continues today with critters around the Copper Country. We start today in 2004, with Sherry Giacaletto and one of her horses. With tail raised in the air, mane flying in the breeze, her horse seems to be saying, “Yippee, the sun is shining, spring must be on its way!” It looks like horses get “cabin fever”, too and can’t wait for warmer days to come, just like the rest of us.
Michele Mukavetz captured the photo of our next critter back in 2011, but at first glance you might not even see him in the shot. She said this little guy kept popping up across their driveway, so she decided to grab her camera and catch him in the act. This time of year chipmunks start coming out of their hibernation mode.
Last, but certainly not least, we have a menagerie of critters from Linda and Joe Schneller, that first appeared on the Pasty Cam in 2013. Wild turkeys have become common visitors around the Keweenaw and this flock was just a small portion of the number of them that the Schneller’s saw that day. What was interesting was the young deer there with them on the side of the road. I guess it was just trying to get across the road to where its mother was. It must have been waiting for all the turkey traffic to clear, before crossing.
Did you know that chipmunks hibernate in the winter months, but that they don’t just sleep through the cold months, like other animals that hibernate? They actually wake up every few days so they can raise their body temperature to normal and eat some of the food they’ve stored away for the winter months. This time of year, they start coming out of their burrows and getting active again. Kind of like the rest of us that suffer from “cabin fever” after a long winter. Take a look at this video of their “coming out”!

Good Monday morning! No work for me today. Was sick all weekend and no better today. The only good thing aobut that is the no work part.
That horse is absolutely beautiful! Love the deer and the turkeys also. Cute little chipmunk in that video.
Critters and creatures are today's features. I like the photo of the turkeys and the deer sharing the same space. I'm kinda angry with the chipmunks as they were part of the menagerie that gobbled up my tulips last spring. DEB: I hope you are feeling better soon.

I think that chipmunk is part raccoon; it carefully washes its "hands" each time it pops out on its quest for more food! 😉

Thanks for that information about hibernating chipmunks. I didn't know that. I sure do enjoy watching those little guys.

Chipmunks are terrible around the outside of my house. Left unchecked they have destroyed the earth that supports the sidewalks, steps and even foundation. I've tried trapping them but they are smart critters. Sorry, but the pellet gun is for self defense.

Cute yes,but.... D.A. I get it! We always had big trouble with them at Little Betsy.

I found some food for the chippies at the store. It's green and comes in little square blocks. After a tasty meal of those they hibernate for a long time.

We have cats to keep the chipmunks at bay...somewhat! They are extremely destructive around here also. But they're so darn cute!

I've considered the edible pellet solution to provide permanent hibernation but I'm afraid I'll inadvertently affect the regular tree squirrels or maybe someone's pet. I am in one of those rarer areas with jet black "tree" squirrels. During past efforts I've felt like "Carl Spackler" if you get the drift.
