It never ceases to amaze me that some years in the archives, the ground is mostly bare by now and other years we still have plenty of snow covering the ground here in the Keweenaw on this “First Day of Spring”. Today’s top photo was submitted by Peter Rigoni back in 2000. He was fishing for Steelhead in the Big Iron River in Ontonagon County. The river was free of ice and you can only see patches on the shoreline, so it actually does look like Spring had sprung that year.

Looking at the photo David Clark shared in 2009, you wouldn’t think Spring was anywhere near to arrive. This photo was taken looking back at Copper Harbor, while snowshoeing out to Hunter’s Point and Porter’s Island.

The last two photos show what it looks like here in the Copper Country for the dawn of Spring on the calendar. Judy Byykkonen and the ladies from WIND (Women in New Directions) snowshoed around McLain Park in the early evening this past week. Several of the ladies took a break to snowshoe swing, in between views like Judy’s second photo of the Upper Entry Lighthouse as dusk settled around Lake Superior. All the ice still hanging on there, makes for some different lighting as the sun goes down.

Our daily video gives us a glimpse of Winter’s End on the Eastern end of the U.P. back in 2016. In the words of Norris Seward, who made the video, “Even though spring is coming and we long await summer, for some, winter will be missed.”

2000 is what I plan to be doing in exactly four months from now......

How my hubby would love to be going up to Brule,
WI to do some steelhead fishing. But since he had
yet another knee replacement a couple of weeks
ago, I'm afraid his spring fling in Brule is out
of the question. It really does look like fun,
though.

Deb,

How is his rehab going? Know it isn't easy!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 - 09:50 pm:

He's only had one PT session so far because his
incision was leaking. They didn't want to make it
worse. He goes again tomorrow but he's just
physically drained. He has a follow-up appt with
his doctor tomorrow so we'll just wait and see
what he says. It sure isn't easy, though. This
is his second one in less than two years. I am
going to need one eventually but may just choose
to live with the pain after seeing what he's going
through. UGH! It's •••• getting older but it
beats the alternative.
