The archive photos today, really don’t have a lot in common, except that they all have something to do with the U.P. of course. Our first shot was taken by Doug Smith in 2007, of the Mackinac Bridge as the backdrop behind a “retired” buoy channel marker, perhaps one that was used in the Great Lakes waters around the Bridge.

Skip ahead one year, to 2008 and we have a photo taken by Karl Berg, who artistically framed the Upper Entry Lighthouse near McLain State Park and the sun, with thick ice chunks he found on the shoreline.

Our third archive shot was taken on the Michigan Tech campus in 2013, by Emma Stout. That’s her brother and her cousin inside the big old Cottonwood tree hole. They were able to get in there with the help of Emma’s uncle for the photo op. Not quite a tree fort, but fun to climb in and see what squirrels feel like living in a tree.

Our video for today is a timely one, because the Mackinac Bridge has been closed several times in the past few months because of wind and falling ice. In case you’ve ever been stranded on one side or the other when this happens, the video shows you why it’s important to close the Bridge down. Watch closely and you’ll see some pretty good size sheets of ice falling from the cables and towers.

The millionth pasty will be enjoyed by some attendee of the Snowmobile Challenge at the Keweenaw Research Center at Houghton County Airport, as MTU hosts there annual pasty feed tomorrow. Charlie,
I saw that number yesterday when it was just under
a million. So excited to see that 1 Million
pasties have been sold!
Congratulations to all, and keep up the good
work!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 - 12:58 pm:

Congratulations on the millionth Pasty!

Greetings:

Like McDonald's in the 1970s, Pasty dot Com might want to look now for an expandable web counter that can easily extend with more zeros.

Congratulations to everyone working at Pasty. A definite milestone.

Great pictures today. My favorite is the second one, the picture of icehenge.
One million pasties equates to how many bottles of ketchup?

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 - 01:31 pm:

Congrats! And with each pasty costing, lets say an average of $6.00, I would like to be the first person to apply for a loan.

Sadly I have read that Cheryl Cundy Rozman of
Quinn, Michigan, daughter of Ransom Cundy crew
member of the Edmund Fitzgerald has passed on at
age 70. Thoughts and prayers to her family and
friends.

Maybe something like this, they seem to have a handle on large counters:

I thought it strange that Google Maps couldn't find "Quinn, MI", and there was only this in Wikipedia for (click →) Quinn, Michigan. (?)

Then I found this, from the Daily Mining Gazette, March 6, 2018,
(click →) Cheryl Lee (Cundy) Rozman

But sad indeed, ditto on thoughts and prayers.

Charlie, did you imagine all those years ago that
you'd reach 1,000,000 pasties sold? Quite a
testament to all the hard work of all those people
over the years. Congratulations!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 - 03:11 pm:

I spelled it Quinn, correct spelling is Qwinn.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 - 05:11 pm:

Yes, I was very sad to hear about Cheryl.
We meet her a couple of different times
and vacationed with her in St Ignace. Up
until this year we exchanged Christmas
cards so I wondered if she was ill. She
suffered many losses in her life and now
she can meet up with them. RIP, Cheryl.

Gwinn?

By Ken ja Mimi from da UP (Kenjamimi) on Wednesday, March 7, 2018 - 11:53 pm:

The correct spelling is Gwinn. It's about half way between Cornell and Marquette. I have a cousin who lives there.

Here is Cheryl's obituary from boatnerd.com

Obituary: Cheryl Lee (Cundy) Rozman

3/8 - Gwinn, Mich. – Cheryl Lee (Cundy) Rozman, age 70, passed away peacefully at her home in Gwinn, Mich., on March 3.

After the passing of her father, Ransom Cundy, who lost his life on the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975, she and other families worked tirelessly to retrieve the ship’s bell, which now resides as a permanent memorial at the Great Lakes Historical Museum in Whitefish Point, Mich. She assisted in creating laws in Michigan and regulations under the Ontario Heritage Act establishing limits on access to shipwrecks for their protection against pillaging their underwater gravesites on both Lake Superior and Lake Ontario. She regularly visited many local schools to educate children about the Edmund Fitzgerald history as well.

Visitation will be at Pearce Funeral Home in Lake Linden, Mich., on Thursday, March 8 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 9 at the Pearce Funeral Home with visitation from 10 a.m. until the start of the service.

In lieu of donations, contributions can be made to the Ahmed Transportation Fund, UP Masonic Center in Marquette, MI or the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society in Sault St. Marie, Michigan. Lastly, in honor of the “1st Annual Spread Goodness Day” on March 9th, we ask that random acts be performed with the hope of creating smiles.

I forgot to thank Janie for sharing that with us. I had known about it and meant to share it, but forgot. So thanks!!

Deb, I thought you had probably knew about
Cheryl's passing. I know you and her stayed in
contact. I read someone's comment about her
passing that she now knows what happened that Nov
10th 1975 night.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 8, 2018 - 12:38 pm:

Oh Janie, that would be nice if she shared that
information.

Kudos on the 1,000,000th pasty sold. That's quite the
achievement!

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Thursday, March 8, 2018 - 06:57 pm:

So sorry to read about Cheryl Rozman's passing. This past Nov.
10th was the first year I didn't read a post from her about the
Edmund Fitzgerald. Now I know why. R.I.P., Cheryl.
