On this day in 2000, the Mendota Lighthouse was the photo of the day. The stories we could tell... My son Jonathan and I helped out during those days, in keeping the weather monitoring equipment connected. One dark winter night the equipment was down, and Jonathan ventured by himself across the channel - pushing a rowboat across the ice, just in case the surface broke through.
There are so many places around the Keweenaw where we have had similar adventures, and I hope to be sharing some of them during this 21st year of our "daily glimpse of life in the U.P.". Thanks to my new bride Debbie Hopper for snapping this picture as we toured the peninsula over the weekend.
Congratulations also to all the mushers who braved the CopperDog 150 this weekend.
Nice pic and video! Charlie, Jonathan's got sisu!! No way I would have done that, especially at night!! Great memories there at Mendota/BG and boating, can't wait to get back this summer, one of my absolute favorite spots! Do you think Mr. Haller would sell me his home!! lol

Wow ~ Jonathan was certainly protected on that night time mission. I hope everyone up there appreciated it!

So many beautiful places for lighthouses UP there. I love visiting all of them. However, doing that at night would never enter my mind. Scary stuff!

It would never enter my mind either, Deb.
