Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 - 08:00 am:

We’re checking out the critters in today’s archive photos. Starting in 2000, with a shot of a horse-drawn wagon ride. I’m not sure of the story behind this oldie, but it certainly looks like it was an early spring that year, with the muddy looking road and hardly any snow. We sure can’t say that this year here in the Copper Country.

We travel to 2002 for our next animal friend, named Bucko. This photo was snapped by Barb Nelson Wenberg of a buck that was a regular visitor at her late husband, Don and her home in Jacobsville. One year, he even left them a gift as he dropped his antlers for them to find there.

Just a couple years ago, in 2016, Philip Odum spotted these two tom Turkeys in the little town of Eckerman. They were all ruffled UP and Phil said when he would give them a yelp, they would answer him. They even gobbled back at him when he started up his car to leave. Talkative and colorful, too!

This past weekend, Jeff Dennis and his family toured the Keweenaw and saw plenty of deer, but the most unusual critter they spotted was a lone coyote out on Lake Superior’s ice pack. They watched it as it ran along, who knows where to.

Jeff’s 7th grade son Walter Dennis made a GoPro video of their explorations this past Saturday around the Keweenaw, including the coyote out on the ice (from a distance) and some unique shots of the Eagle Harbor Lighthouse. Enjoy the tour with Walter and family!

UC asked a couple weeks ago about no posts from Deb S. I too am wondering. From posting every day to nothing this year. I hope every thing is ok.

Nice job with the video. Thnks.

As usual, it was a bit of a struggle searching this archaic web site (even with Google or (click →) Google Advanced Search)¹, but I did find this one-and-only(?) post from Deb S. from January 1, 2017 to date:
(click →) Deb's last post Tuesday, May 23, 2017 - 05:30 pm (?)
Could that really be Deb's last visit here?
I too hope all's well with Deb and "Mr. Deb"!

Incidentally, what has been going on here?
It seems there's barely a half-dozen of us regulars left.
Has everyone else lost interest?

Could it be a growing reaction to the current use of selected content from prior years, a …
"daily rerun of life in the U.P."
… as opposed to the original …
"daily glimpse of life in the U.P." ?

This quote from the (click →) Pasty FAQ page seems particularly acute right now:

What does the future hold for Pasty Central? First, we are committed to maintain excellent service and provide satisfaction to our customers. New local sponsors are continually joining us as well. In 1999 we became a full service ISP and began producing for wholesale distribution, under USDA inspection. We welcome your suggestions as to how this project might be more effective and grow in days ahead.

I think the current pictures, especially this time of the year are of
more interest then just the old. The current video's are the best. This
is still our page that opens when we go on the internet.Bob in IL (a
upper want be)

No, Deb posted at least as recently as this:

Just love the lighthouse picture, as always. And
that video was so cool. I wouldn't want to be on
one, but they are so cool to watch like that.

As i recall, she noted earlier the passing of Mr.
Deb's mother, which may be keeping them busy.

Frnash, i'm sure you didn't mean that comment as harsh as it sounded. Charlie and crew work very hard to provide a pleasant and informative site for everyone to enjoy, and we appreciate it. Few folks have the background you do to know what can't be done.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, February 28, 2018 - 11:03 pm:

Harsh?

Not intended to be harsh; I have just been noticing the severe dropoff in attendance here, and seeking the answer: Why?

Yes, it has been a long, diligent effort by Charlie and Mary, at times perhaps verging on thankless, even.

I do appreciate the magnitude of the task that an upgrade would be.

For a few years now I have seriously considered volunteering to dip an oar in myself, ‘tho I have no real heavy experience in HTML5, I have never been afraid of learning something new.

(I have often thought this would be a prime candidate for an SQL database, for efficiently storing, retrieving and searching all the bits and pieces — certainly a huge task.

But I’ve been away from client/server database applications for 17+ years already. That and I "ain’t no spring chicken" any more, with a host of medical issues — none of which would necessarily keep my fingers off a PC keyboard though, I hope!)

There are off-the-shelf forum apps that might be a simpler alternative (c.f. John Dee’s forum) than a scratch-built database app.

P.S.: It looks like the Copper Country sure had a 24-hour doozy of a power outage, at least from the look of the UPPCO outage map that I was looking at last night!

I hope everyone's all OK.

As a matter of fact, as demonstrated by your earlier post, even the Google Advanced search failed to find Deb's post:

Do you suppose that was a failure of the Google search, or as to my characterization of this web site, perhaps "QED"?

I am confident that even Charlie would agree with that characterization, never mind that he has done a stellar job of keeping this dinosaur functioning, without even once failing to post the daily message before midnight — for twenty years — including February 28, 2018, in spite of a near 24-hour catastrophic UPPCO power failure!

I enjoy looking at Pasty Central every day, i.e.
photos, comments, cams...Thank You!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, March 1, 2018 - 09:39 pm:

Thanks for all of the inquiries as to my
whereabouts. I haven't gone anywhere, just much
going on in our lives, and when the year came to
an end, I forgot to go in and make sure I
received daily updates from pasty. That's
always my reminder to get in here, if I'd
forgotten, to see what's going on. But with
mostly all old pictures (as much as I've enjoyed
them), it just wasn't the same anymore. I like
seeing new daily pictures. Most of the time, I
did enjoy seeing the older pictures, and I
enjoyed the videos. But I like seeing what's
going on right now, I guess. I really hope that
pasty gets back to the way it was, with numerous
posts every day. And thanks to Uncle Chuck for
letting me know that I was being asked about.
And thanks to you too, Mary. I've meant to get
on many times, but something always got in the
way. I've missed you guys.

Glad to heve you back, Deb!
