Hills, hills and more hills in the archives and a current one, too. That’s what we have going on here today, but the first shot is more than just a hill, it’s a mountain. Brockway Mountain to be precise. The shot was taken by Pete Wilberding back in 2006, when he was here on a snowmobiling trip.

The second hill, isn’t really a hill, but sure looks like one. Clarissa Gaff snapped this 2009 photo of the Superior National Bank building after the roof had been shoveled off. That’s a huge pile of snow there, which makes me wonder how they moved that pile then, too.

OK, you caught me on this one, it’s not a hill at all, it’s conglomerate rock on the shores of Lake Superior. But seriously, it looks like a hill, doesn’t it? An icy, snow covered hill, yep, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Joe Kirkish took this shot in 2011, on a winter visit to check out his cottage near Copper Harbor. I like the fringe of icicles around the bottom of this “hill”.

Paul and Nathalie Brandis, better known on the Pasty Cam as Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat were here in the Copper Country recently and took a drive north toward Copper Harbor. Along the way, they stopped for a photo of the Cliffs, near Phoenix. Paul said he was near the Cliff Cemetery and if it had been summer, he’d have been standing right in the Eagle River to snap the shot. I guess the fact that it was -4° that day is a good thing, then, otherwise he could have gotten his feet wet.

Our video today is taking us by snowmobile, up to the top of Brockway Mountain, with Rick Reynolds. The ride is a bit bumpy, but don’t worry, you won’t feel a thing, not even the cold wind hitting your face as you ascend the mountain. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view!

Love them all. Oh, how I wish I could spend just one more winter up
in God's country but that's not to be. I miss the beauty of the Copper
Country. I especially love that first picture of Brockway. It looks like
it had been cut in half with a large knife. I'm sure if I look back there
will be something on its history by Capt Paul and Dr. Nat.

I'm with Richard...just one more. The pix are great and the video is Olympic-crazy. I've done that ride many a time on the Wing...summertime, of course.

That is a fabulous video!! Music, no snowmobile noise. I only want to hear that when I'm sitting on it! I didn't realize they removed all the signage at the top of the mountain!! Is that a permanent thing, or only for winter? And if it's only winter, what a shame...there's apparently tons of visitors up there, that would LOVE that picture!! Beautiful, beautiful ride!!

Mary says: Donna...I didn't realize they remove the signage at the top of Brockway in the winter, until I watched the video, either. I'm guessing they do, to preserve them from the nasty winter winds and snow we get, since I would imagine the snow and ice would damage them, along with the blizzard winds out in the open UP there. But I'm only guessing, along with the knowledge that they remove most all the Keweenaw signs up that way for the winter.

My first time on a snowmobile I made that ride up Brockway, from the Eagle Harbor side. I was going up at what I thought was a pretty fast pace, when all of a sudden a snowmobile passed me like I was standing still. I didn't hear or expect to be passed, startled me to say the least!! Rode all day long that day, by the time we got back to our hotel in Houghton, I could barely get off the sled, my hips will never be the same, it's not for me! lol

Great late afternoon for a sunset ride up to Brockway.

I learned a lot from Joe Kirkish when I took both his film class and photography class. How is he doing lately? He must be 90 something.

Mary is correct. The sign you noticed missing, hangs and is thus susceptible to the harsh winter weather. That and I guess they figure since visitation is dramatically reduced that it's not worth the "wear and tear".

Wow!!!

This is the first I've visited PastyCam all weekend and behold, I see my photo at Cliff. Mary's not lying.... it was cold when I shot that photo, but the lighting was just right to capture a side of the Cliffs I've never been able to get.
