We’re doing a bit of traveling within the archives today, visiting Houghton, Gulliver and Marquette. We start out with Olivia Bartlett, on the Portage Canal, back in 2004. She took a walk that can only be done in the winter and then only if you’re brave enough to be out on the ice. Myself, I think I’ll just stay on the land, thank you!
We head southeast to the shores of Lake Michigan for out next shot, snapped by Lynn Virtanen in 2010. She was checking out the Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, near the town of Gulliver. We visited this same lighthouse two weeks ago, on Feb. 5th, but that day we were flying over it courtesy of a drone. Today we’re there at ground level for a look.
Our stop in Marquette was last year in 2017 and took us to the shoreline of Marquette Harbor, where the UP 200 Dog Sled race was taking place. This year’s race took place this past weekend, so if you’re interested in the results, you can find them on this link, under “Standings”: 2018 UP 200.
We’re heading back to Houghton for our video feature, with a snowmobile ride along the canal with Matthew VanDuyn in 2013, including a drive under the Lift Bridge several times.
Note the following disclaimer... after walking and riding on the ice today... frozen lakes, ponds, canals or any body of water are not safe for this type of activity. Neither myself or Pasty.com is advocating going out on the ice, either by snowmobile or on foot, so please don’t try this at home!

I agree about going on the ice. Last week a lot of people went out on the ice in Marquette harbor. They took some pretty photos and videos and acted like it was the greatest thing in the world. Next day it was all open water. One of these people actually posted on Facebook asking what happened to the ice and why did it disappear? A real Yooper knows to stay off ice associated with Lake Superior but these wannabes just think the ice is made for them. Nobody got hurt this time but every year the lake takes its share of these creatures and then their flatlander families complain that "Nobody warned us" They get into trouble and then expect someone to risk their life because they have no common sense at all.

Yikes.... Couldn't agree more, stay off the ice!! Every year somebody needs to be rescued off of Lake St. Clair down here as well! They are doing a rescue/recovery right now on Saginaw Bay!! We're going to hit the fifties today and low sixties tomorrow.... dangerous!!

That was a neat video of snowmobiling under the lift bridge. Don't think I'd stand up during that ride!

60s, Yay! I would be going for a bike ride for sure, if only.

No thanks going under the Lift Bridge!!!! I've seen too many times where there is either no ice or a very thin sheet of slushy ice under there..... just too dangerous!
I'm with you UC; I don't remember a year where somebody didn't have to be rescued off St. Clair or Saginaw Bay because an ice shelf broke off and was headed offshore.
