It’s been a cold week here in the Keweenaw and from the looks of it in the archives, it was the same for most of the past 20 years. Today’s archive shots prove that, starting back in 2008, with a shot of the Tahquamenon Falls, snapped by Jon Jacobson. This photo was posted after someone had requested a look at the Falls in the winter time.
Our 2009 archive shot also comes from Jon Jacobson, this time on Mackinac Island. It looks a little different in the winter months, without the hordes of visitors walking around. This time of year there are only around 500 residents on Mackinac Island. But when the peak season arrives, it can swell to over 15,000.
We jump ahead to 2017, with a view from Presque Isle in Marquette, snapped by Ed Korpi. He and his wife, Laurie, like to keep active in the winter, so last year this time, they were snowshoeing out at Presque Isle Park, enjoying the hike and especially the views. Interesting that the ice hadn’t formed around this cliff very far out into Lake Superior.
Just this past weekend, Melanie Hakala Rossi and a group of friends headed up to McLain Park to do some snowshoeing of their own. From the looks of this shot, the Upper Entry seems to be frozen at least all the way out to the Lighthouse and beyond somewhat, too. The temps over the weekend were quite chilly and when you add in the windchill, it makes the temperature bitter cold, but these folks braved the biting cold for a winter trek on the shores of Lake Superior.
Still on Superior’s shores, but further east, we get to visit the Whitefish Point area, including a look at the Lighthouse there. Today’s video was made back in 2017, showing the icy shoreline and waves still crashing along the edge.

All good photos but Tahquamenon is always my favorite no matter
what time of year. Thanks.

All great pictures today but I'm partial to the one of the Tahquamenon falls.
