The archive photos for today are once again taking a look at some of the things us Yoopers do to help pass the long winters UP here. We start off with a shot from 2004, snapped by Rick Anderson from Skypixs.com. He made a flight over the Lac La Belle area for a great view of the frozen lake and Mount Bohemia with the ski runs showing, too. This ski hill is referred to as the Midwest Powder Mecca.
Our next winter activity from the archives, is not a real common one here UP North, but it looks like it would be fun to try. Taana Kalliainen captured the action at a winter baseball game back in 2010. I can think of one advantage to playing in the winter...your uniform will stay much cleaner!
The winter activity that Halli Lindley shared with us in 2016, is a more common one here in the Copper Country, snowshoeing. And actually their destination at the Hungarian falls, with the view of Torch Lake in the distance below, is also a common snowshoeing destination for folks around these parts.
I tried finding a winter baseball video for today’s viewing, but didn’t come up with anything from the U.P., so instead, we’re going to take a look at skiing Mount Bohemia. After watching this, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you should have some skiing experience to take on these runs. What do you think?

X-tremely intense video! Talent, endurance and guts...not necessarily in that order.

The 2004 pic is just fantastic, and it's now my background pic! The video is insane!! Alex, I'll try it if you will too!! lol

Exciting video but with all those trees so close they are just one mistake from having a Sonny Bono moment, God forbid.
Even though it's a bit chilly, it looks like the weather has been nice and sunny for Winter Carnival. Great weather for statue viewing and photographing.
My memories of Winter Carnival while at Tech are a bit different. It seems I spent much of my time in the darkroom. I bet some younger people don't know what that means. I worked for the "Lode" and we always published a special magazine for Winter Carnival. It was a lot of work taking pictures of everything. I think the stage review was held alternately at both Houghton and Hancock High Schools year to year. Taking good statue photos is always difficult but especially so on overcast days.
Good memories DA, thanks for sharing. And U.C., I have a better idea...let's not and say we did. :-)

Heard my brother talk about the "Lode" DA, and I had forgotten about Sonny Bono, God forbid is right!! Alex, I like your idea better, but nobody would believe me anyway..... until I hit the water in Lac La Belle and everyone heard of the tsunami I caused!! :=))

D. A. (Midwested), we have something in common! I was the photographer for our high school newspaper and yearbook. I'd take pictures of an event, come home, develop the film in my home darkroom, give it a few hours to dry, then make the prints to be used in the newspaper. Made for some long nights!
I'm celebrating, i finished my taxes and e-filed today. Woo hoo!

I doubt I'd win the beard contest these days although my beard is still just as nice, albeit all gray now. From what I've read, the beard contests have nowadays turned into talent competitions.
Funny story. During my last trip in the summer of 2016 I was in the basement of the Memorial Union (next to the bowling alley), tapping on the dry wall with my knuckles. A nice young person passed by, asking if I needed help. I replied that there was a room behind this blank wall (it was the old newspaper darkroom). That's when she gave me, "that look".

At that point you should have gone into full "X-Files" mode! Until she called campus security anyway........

When I lived in Tamarack Mills (City, now) we used to go up there by the Hungarian Falls. If I look around I could probably come up with the same pic of 2016. We used to swim at the Dam up there and at the 'Mama' Falls. That was a loooong time ago.
