Looking back in the archives each day, makes you realize how different our winters here in the Keweenaw are from year to year. Some years we have more cold and ice build up than others, for example, back in 2006, Joyce Tormala was looking out over Lake Superior from an embankment high above the water. A good vantage point to see how far the ice has accumulated into the Big Lake.

Our next archive shot was snapped by Lindsay Butala back in 2011. She was at Mont Ripley with her nephew, doing some snowboarding and captured this scene from the top of the ski hill. That’s quite a view of the Portage Canal and everything below, one of the bonuses of skiing/snowboarding this scenic hill.

Just last year in 2017, Cathy McKenzie was up at Calumet Township Waterworks Park, also known as Bucky’s. She shot this scene looking out at Lake Superior, framing it with the stairway there. From this vantage point, it looks like the ice goes on forever out there on Lake Superior.

So that brings us to the present, with a photo from Emma Stout. She was out cruising with her brother and they stopped at the Devil’s Washtub location on M-26, before you get to Copper Harbor. They walked out onto the ice to look at the ice volcanoes, where they captured the photo here today, showing the huge wall of ice that built up over the Washtub rocks there. Emma said it was pretty cool to see where they jump off in the summertime all frozen like that.

Our video today, takes us to the same spot on a February day in 2013, filmed by Amanda Wais Rogers. There wasn’t as much ice, but the waves and wind were pretty amazing.

Very nice! 2018 would make a nice border-wall, if we could just convince the Mexicans to move up to Canada. (This is what tax season does to preparers.)
