This New Year has brought with it plenty of snowfall, which of course is not unusual for the U.P. this time of year. Through the archive photos we get to revisit years with plenty and years with less than plenty. We start today with a shot from Dan Urbanski, snapped back in 2002 of the view the skiers see of the Porkies. Dan said this is the scenic grandeur of the Lake Of The Clouds Escarpment, as seen from the western shoulder of the Porkies Ski Area.
In 2006, Dan Brown shared a shot of a winter farm scene that is common when cruising the roads and highways around the U.P. This one was located near Eben Junction and it looks like it was one of those "less than plenty" years for snow.
Then 2010 the snow making was ramped up again, which you can see in the third shot, shared by Chris Gariepy while out snowmobiling in the Keweenaw. The group was taking a break from riding before tackling the pole line with their machines. I like that it looks like it goes on forever, like riding off into the sunset, only this would be riding off into the winter wonderland.
Beth Jukuri found a similar path to the one above, on a recent snowshoe excursion she took. Only her "pole line" was actually a "tree line". The way these trees were planted in rows and then forms a perfect trail through the woods is so neat. Doesn't it make you just want to get out there and enjoy the tranquility of a peaceful forest?
Alex Maier produced an aerial winter tour of the Upper Peninsula back about a year ago, comprised of about a month and a half worth of footage from different locations around the U.P. He said most of them were in the Marquette area. Enjoy the bird's eye view, it's the next best thing to flying over it all yourself!

Hi Beth, is the dog following in your snowshoe tracks? Our Alaskan Malamute would take advantage of our cross-country ski tracks, at least when she got tired. When not tired, her competitive/lead dog tendencies pushed her to be first down the trail.

That picture of the Marquette Lighthouse is the reddest red I have ever seen. It certainly is eye catching.
