Winter Wonderland, that's what the U.P. has often been referred to and today's photos from the archives give some good examples of why. We have a shot snapped by Taka Aoki in 2002, on a visit he made to the Hungarian Falls in the Tamarack City/Hubbell area. Water is still flowing, but down below where it settles is freezing up quite well, showing off some winter beauty.
In 2004, Lee Rowe was at Presque Isle breakwall in Marquette and captured a spectacular shot of a wave crashing over the wall, with snow filling the air. The power of Lake Superior never ceases to amaze me, no matter the season.
Donna MacIntosh had a quieter, more peaceful scene, but cold looking just the same. She shot this frosty morning along Keweenaw Bay, in 2015. Wouldn't it make a great wintry puzzle to fill the chilly winter days with.
Our video is from a number of years back, too, recorded in 2008 and it goes along with the second photo with some wave action at Presque Isle in Marquette. Nice to watch the crashing waves from the warmth of home, no winter gear required.

These pics made me put on a thicker sweatshirt! Looks like winter's settled in for good, even here in the Northeast.

I like the ice that looks like a cauliflower at the base of Hungarian Falls. Hopefully the cold will not be as fierce as it has been. For a few days there it was cold enough to shiver up a sweat.

These pix definitely go with today's weather. "Chill and numbs from head to toe -Icy sun with frosty glow" (Black Sabbath)

Icy pictures are nice but we only need to step outside this week for the real thing, and then some. Our friends across The Lake in Minnesota are experiencing record lows (-36 deg!!) and the eastern end of Lake Erie just saw over 60 inches of snow in only 2 days. I looked back through the Keweenaw County daily snow records, going back to 2006, and the biggest 2 day total was only about half of that. I'm curious. What's the biggest single day or 2 day total for the U.P. that someone might remember? Next week looks to only get colder, also with higher winds. Brrrr!.

Saw this headline but don't know over how many days:

I don't know about snow but I remember one winter in the city of Ishpeming where the temp never got above zero for 31 days in a row. Not sure what year it was but I have lived in the house I live in now for 23 years and it was before that.

That cold snap was in '76 or '77. We lived in Ishpeming then and I was working outside for part of it! I was working for Frahling Electric and we had to complete an RV campground so the Bechtel people had power for their rigs. It was the beginning of the Tilden II expansion. A water main broke in town and it ran for quite awhile before they could repair it. Another good reason to live in CA!

Roger, That sounds right; i was living in Marquette those years and it was bitter cold. Of course i was just a college student at NMU, so i had it easy compared to you!
