It always surprises me when looking back at the past 19 years of photos in the archives, that some days the subjects are of similar scenes or places, just years apart. Today is one of those days and the theme is Lake Linden. Carl Kiilunen (RIP Carl…) starts us off with a shot of the "old" American Legion Post 90 building being torn down in 2005. Their new building to the left in this shot, had already been begun with a two phase construction plan.
In 2008, E. Neil Harri made a flyover with Lake Linden down below. I didn't recognize my own hometown immediately, as this is a different angle, looking east over the town. Once you pick out the High School, Elementary School, old Catholic School and St. Joseph Church, you'll get your bearings. I was also surprised at the "gullys" leading into town from the west.
The last photo was taken in 2011, during the village Christmas in Lake Linden celebration. How fun to ride down the main street in a horse drawn wagon. Looks like it was one of those unseasonably sunny days with very little snow on the ground that year.
Lake Linden is one of many small U.P. villages, but seems like there's always something going on around town. Today's video is from 2007 when Michigan Technological University hosted the Baja SAE Winter Invitational competition around the grounds of the Lake Linden Park. The MTU Blizzard Baja Enterprise has been holding these competitions since 1981, where student organizations from schools across the country design, build and test a single-seat off-road vehicle for the competition. Looks like a unique way to cruise around town.

As we can see, "Outdoors" is the place to be!
Newton N. Minow and like minds observed in the past that after 50 years, the evidence is everywhere that TV, far from providing a great tool of education, is a tool of stupefaction & disintegration.
So have we evolved forward much with our new computer & phone screens??
