Starting in November and December, the last 19 years of archive photos often include snow. We explore some of those years from this day, starting with a Shoebox Memory shot Charlie shared from the MTU Archives, back in 2002. The photo was featured in a book by Dave Engel and Gerry Mantel - "Calumet: Copper Country Metropolis". It reports on the boom years in the Copper Country, as seen through the eyes of newspaper reports and Pasty Camists of the 1890's through 1910's. Quite the snow removal operation going on there.
In 2007, Joyce Tormala was on the shores of Lake Superior and captured these two "hounds" enjoying the winter chill of the Big Lake. You might be thinking there's only one "hound" in this photo, but actually the person walking behind the four-legged hound was picking rocks before this photo was snapped, so that makes him/her a "rock hound"!
Back to removing the snow, with a photo from Bill Haller taken back in 2008. That's his wife, Eloise using quite the unique method of blowing the snow off their deck. Yes, that IS a leaf blower she's using - easy on the back and the wood, yet it gets the job done as you can see. The ingenuity of Yoopers always amazes me!
Our last archive shot for the day is a snowless one. It was snapped by Jeremy TePaske on a visit to the Porcupine Mountains in 2009. That's Samuel and Atticus checking out the scenery through the coin-operated binoculars at Lake of the Clouds. Even though there was no snow in sight, they're dressed warmly with hoods and gloves to ward off the chill. Good thing, since I imagine at that higher altitude, the winds make it quite cool this time of year.
We end today's snow review with a video recorded in 2012, when an Upper Peninsula resident stepped outside to catch his neighbor having fun while clearing the snow from his driveway. There's that Yooper ingenuity again…if you have to do the job, you might as well make it fun at the same time.

Sweet pix and nice video...considering technique and difficulty, I give him an 8.5.

I give him a 9.0 for not falling.
Puts me in the mind of this new vacuum cleaner I bought.....it is liteweight, which is what I wanted, it just goes forward on it's own. If I were to let it go while I was using it, it would just take off across the floor. I might take it back.

LOL! I guess you might as well make it fun!!

I like the first picture with the leaf blower. I have to try that on my 15 steps that are 10 feet wide going down to the street from my house.

Maybe what you need is a (click →) iRobot Roomba Robot Vacuum. A number of models will do the whole vacuuming chore autonomously then find their way back to park at their "home base" while recharge their battery for the next run.
All you need to do is relax in your recliner chair and perhaps lift your legs when the Roomba comes by! That sounds like a plan!
Yeah, right, and I'm supposed to believe that? (Kinda pricey gadgets too!)
Now where's the Yooper "Snowbot" for attending to the snow removal chores on the deck and around the yard autonomously? That'll work! 😉

I been thinking about getting one of these, but I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit. Also, I can't believe I still have to do something like empty it...I need one that empty's itself, takes out the trash and brings me a beer. :-

Hei Alex UP Goldwinger, sounds like you have some of that UP ingenuity going for you. Put a little SISU in it and you may have something! It would be interesting to see. :o)

FRNash....I saw those vacuums, for some reason, they never interested me. :O) I also like the new one I bought because it gets under the baseboard heaters.

Why is it that people who don't know whether they're coming or going are in the biggest hurry to get there?
