Come with us to "the middle of nowhere" about 20 miles north of Marquette in today's video, and experience conditions identical to those we saw this week here by the shore of the Big Lake. After a horrendous wind storm on Tuesday, cold, wet, snowy weather moved in.
On Thursday I personally spent a couple of hours in those brutal conditions on the top of Brockway, while our generator charged the batteries that serve Eagle Harbor, Eagle River, and all the way to Sunset Bay. We were forced to make the changeover to wind power early this year, because the solar panels just don't gather enough sunlight to run the relay for Pasty.NET that brings the broadband to the very computer on which I am typing these words. The snow has melted off this morning, so we'll make another run up Brockway, but radar shows more precip moving in tomorrow and throughout the week.
Thanks to John Dodge for his 2013 windsurfing photo, and to Quinn Kaspriack for the unique study of light on a calmer Superior nighttime shore. This is actually the photo that appears on our current calendar.

My favorite quotes from the professional windsurfers in the video:
"It just happens to be not Hawaii. It happens to be out here in the middle of nowhere."
Good to know that the U.P. is still more remote than Hawaii.
AND
Pro Windsurfer to Local Surfer: "How often do you surf here without a wetsuit."
Local Surfer: "I don't wear a wet suit and I surf all the time."

Great pictures and that video was so much fun. We've seen surfer on Lake Superior both on the North Shore of MN and in the Great Sand Bay area. The temps were freezing both times. I was in awe of those people. I hardly venture out to do something when the temps and wind chills are like that so kudos to them. I'm so enjoying these videos!
