A variety of interesting subjects appeared in the archives this day throughout the past 19 years. We start off with a photo that was featured in 2005, shared by Richard Barclay, who said that the lady standing by the sign is his mother-in-law. She and her friends rode their bikes from Hubbell and Lake Linden, up US-41 to Copper Harbor as a last get together before Betty got married. This sign was located at the cross-cut road from US-41 to Eagle Harbor. Interesting that a number of the businesses are still operating 68 years later.

Jamie Harter snapped the next shot out at Big Traverse, where she spotted the fishing boat, Spirit with its stern up on the shore. Back in 2010 when it first appeared I speculated that perhaps a tornado or maybe strong winds pushed it up like that, but the reality was that the motor on the boat needed some work, so the owners used heavy construction equipment to pull the vessel out of the water enough to work on the engine. Ingenuity at its best!

The final photo today was the daily photo in 2014 and comes from Kassy Kallio and is titled quite appropriately as "Glorious Autumn". The colors, the leaves on the ground, the blue sky and clouds... it needs no more words, it's just glorious!

Today's video is not about colors, it's not about autumn, it's not about leaves on the ground, it's a clip of the fishing boat, Spirit, from the second photo here above. Even though it's a winter scene, when I found it on YouTube, I thought it was neat to see it "plowing" through the ice on Traverse River. Enjoy the voyage!

A stark reminder of days to come. This mild autumn makes me forget about what's around the corner. 70s in the forecast again this week.

OK...MY question is: HOW long did it take to ride a
bike from Lake Linden to Copper Harbor? WOW...and
did someone drive up to get them, or did they spend
the night?

Gorgeous images and videos this morning! Thanks
all! The Upper Entry cam is just spectacular this
morning, too.

It would be cool, if it was determined where the girls and signs are, and go out there and take a picture of where it could have been.

mickill,

There seems to be two choices for this location. It could be on Brockway Road. The left placard states "6 miles to Junction M26". If the location was on M26 itself the wording of this phrase might be different, something like "6 miles to Junction of Brockway Road West". If you are already on M26 would they really give directions to the junction of M26 without saying the intersecting road?

This leaves the 6 mile measurement to contend with. Six miles from the M26/Brockway West junction puts the location a mile past the parking lot top of Brockway. It's 5 miles to the peak of Brockway and the parking lot. A 6 mile location is a mile further east and it to is also a nice overlook of the pond and also looks back to the peak of Brockway. Maybe the parking lot on top did not exist back then?

Now, the main purpose of the directory's middle placard seems to be to advertise for locations on M26. So the location could be on M26. Using the same 6 mile data, the location ends up right where the Eagle Lodge Cabins is located today (just west of Hebard Park). It is easy to imagine many of the private homes in that area were previously cabins for rent, bars, restaurant, etc.

D.A.: O.K.....said with a big smile on my face. ;O)

My mom grew up in Calumet, and she use to tell me how she rode her bike all over the place. (She was born in 1932.)

It seems the company that wanted to purchase the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge, is pulling out of their offer.

I read the story on, www.keweenawreport.com
