There was a different theme in today's archive photos from the past 19 years, having to do with roads... backroads, county roads, roads less traveled and of course, autumn leaves. We start the trio of photos with one from 2003, taken by Megan Elmblad when she was out for a ride with her Dad, Clyde between L'Anse and Skanee. I love the way the trees are forming a canopy over the backroad there.

The perspective in the second photo is quite unique. Sandeep Fernandes snapped this one in 2004, of a country road complete with gravel and leaves scattered about. What a great place to take a walk, surrounded in color.

The last of the "road" shots, comes to us from Marilyn Bachorik and appeared in 2013. She was enjoying the fall colors on the road to Grand Marais. Vibrant hues, for sure, but I also like the already fallen leaves lining the sides of the road. Such a pretty time of year.

Since we're checking out the backroads here today, I thought it would be a nice change to share a music video. This one is called "Backroads", by Hannah Bethel, singer/songwriter, from back in 2009. Hannah was born and raised here in Houghton and is now living in Nashville and making music. Check out her webpage for more about Hannah and her music: HannahBethel.com.

What great pictures. I love simple road pictures
so much. And Hannah is pretty darn good. Another
great start to my morning!

Very nice and I like the MTV spin today. I'm personally naming the video: "Hannah got Back.......roads."

Just lovely images and music video today! Thanks,
all! The 1999 image is one of my very favorites of
all time; so many good things happening with
composition and color in that shot.

I wonder if anybody looked at the MTU webcams this morning.....? The lift bridge was completely gone. The college ave. site was amazing, too. The fog was incredible.

Bummer :-( I missed MTU webcams this morning because I was so busy...1040s are taxing.

Beautiful back roads exist throughout the U.P. Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting many of them. I even tried some of the narrow ones commonly referred to as "two tracks". Two lessons learned, 1)Make sure you know how deep that next "puddle" is and resist the urge to continue and 2)Be careful where you try to turn around.

The Fall colors were not peaking yet in most places but I discovered and photographed many new, interesting and unique things. I made it to Mt. Arvon, Huron River, Big Erik's Falls, Black Slate River Falls, Quartzite Falls, Lower Silver Falls, Agate Falls, Black River Potawatomi and Gorge Falls and even Point Abbaye (beautiful view of the Keweenaw from there).

I invite you to visit my new Pasty Cam Album. I even ran into an 18 wheeler logging truck on the Covered Road.

Every day is another beautiful walk thru the best season of the year!

I like the first and third pictures. Both would be a good place to take a walk beneath a canopy of gold.

The bridge was hidden in fog this morning?

I missed that as well. (With this 3 hour time difference due to DST, I rarely ever see anything in da UP in the morning — unless I'm still up after a very long night!)

So, I thought I'd catch it on the MTU Lift Bridge (click →) Time Lapse video.

The latest one available was October 10 (24 hours from 00:00 to 23:59 on 10/10, a day too early) so no luck with that, but I noticed the bridge was lowered at ≈10:00AM and raised at ≈2:00PM yesterday (in the time lapse video at 25 sec. & 36 sec. respectively).

I wonder what that was all about, it didn't seem to be related to any boat traffic.
