When you think U.P., you often think of the remoteness, along with the forests, lakes and so many falls. Our look back at the past 19 years of photos today supports this line of thinking. Back in 2008, Bruce Watters captured a four-wheeler headed down a trail that disappears into the woods. Just look at the size of those trees lining the trail…pretty impressive!
Of course here in the Keweenaw when we talk lakes, it's always Lake Superior. Just a year ago, in 2016, Melanie Hakala Rossi was on the shores of Gitche Gumee when she was rocking and rolling with waves crashing to shore…again, quite impressive!
That brings us to the here and now, with Deb and Ron Simons who were here in the U.P. visiting this week and made a visit to the Potawatomi Falls near Bessemer. These falls are located on the Black River and were still running strong. That in itself is impressive for this time of year, but then we've had plenty of rain this summer, so that helps.
Deb and Ron not only snapped photos to share with us, but video, too. Click the arrow to see the sights, then click the speaker to hear the sounds.

AWESOME vid!! Love that sound!! I swear I could live next to the water, but I do have a friend on Lady Superior up in the Keweenaw, and she says it's LOUD when it's roaring!!

Great pictures today. I do love the sight and sound of the waterfall and the roar of the Big Lake. I'm not a big fan of four wheelers but to each his own.

I agree, that volume of water going over the falls is impressive this time of year. Beautiful falls and i notice that the trail and viewing deck are wheelchair accessible.
Thanks for the video Deb & Ron ~ very soothing!

Unfortunately, we're headed back to Minnesota but decided to visit the Black River again to see the Great Conglomerate Falls. Very impressive.

Road from Bessemer 13 miles to Black River Harbor, has always been our favorite. The succession of falls and their access hikes...the campground and beaches at at the end of the road. Thimble-berries. Nice sand beach on Lake Superior to the East of rivers meeting with the lake, and completely different rocky beach to the west. No place better!!
