Our look back into the past 19 years of the Pasty Cam had an interesting theme for today…flowers, bees, butterflies and photographer Brenda Leigh. Brenda's photography has appeared many times throughout the years, but in both 2009 and 2010, we featured photos from her on this day. The first was all flowers bright and colorful, with a big fat bee in the midst of them. And then the following year, more color, but this time with a butterfly.

I went in search of current flowers and insects from Brenda and found the third photo of her geraniums, with a butterfly there again. Only this butterfly was a mystery as to how it appeared and who may have left it there for Brenda to find. It took a little time, but the mystery was solved that one of Brenda's friends had stopped by and stuck that pretty stained glass insect there as a surprise.

The last photo today is another current beauty and fit in so well with today's theme that I had to include it. Jean Dessellier captured a butterfly and a small wasp/bee sharing a flower in her garden and was able to snap a shot before they both took off. The colors of summer are gorgeous!

Our video feature was filmed a few years back in the Pictured Rocks area, showing a plethora of butterflies, along with a few scenic shots towards the end. Enjoy the short respite from your busy day.

I like all the flutterbys today. I remember seeing a show on tv about the monarchs and the shrinking amount of milkweed, which is their main food source. Then I ran across this this morning.

"It started with the best of intentions. When evidence emerged that monarch butterflies were losing the milkweed they depend on due to the spread of herbicide-resistant crops in the United States, people across the country took action, planting milkweed in their own gardens. But a new paper shows that well-meaning gardeners might actually be endangering the butterflies’ iconic migration to Mexico. That’s because people have been planting the wrong species of milkweed, thereby increasing the odds of monarchs becoming infected with a crippling parasite."

On a brighter note, if you get to Mackinac Island go to the Butterfly House. There are hundreds of different kinds of flutterbys. It is a neat place to see.
