One of my favorite shots in the last 20 years on the Pasty Cam is the one by Bert DeVriendt of those two young ladies in the sand of Bete Grise. Edie and I have spent many hours along that beach, with campers from Gitche Gumee, our children and grandchildren, our parents, and others. Somewhere I have a video of Edie's younger brother Doug and myself, challenging each other to dive in those waters on a day when they were about 49 degrees. I remember screaming under water at the shock of the sudden change :) Old movies are priceless, and I found today's on Youtube to have some of these landmarks as they were seen in the 1950's.
A side note about the rock piles from '98: That's Governor Engler being interviewed, the day we first met. I shared the Pasty Central story with him, and how we were using this relatively new medium of the World Wide Web. Two years later his administration named Pasty Central as the Technology Site of the Year. There's a Pasty Cameo in the archives of my speech at the Technology Summit in 2000.
It's fun to reminisce about the lives we've enjoyed here in the U.P. - I hope this has been a memorable summer for you and yours.
Great 8mm videi-0! I have a lot of footage from way back when, that I had transferred to DVD...always fun to watch. Now I must prepare for the eclipse, by fashioning a new aluminum cranium cap and washing my asbestos lined undies.

I've always liked the photo of the girls on Bete Gris beach, I think it was circa 1954...

It is mentioned that the photo of the girls on the beach was taken by Bert DeVriendt. I worked with Bert at the Daily Mining Gazette back when I first started there in 1969. Excellent photographer and a wonderful person, it's an honor just to have known him. Seems to me that Bert was already somewhat up in age already then.
