The archives have held many photos showing the sky in Upper Michigan…night skies, sunsets, clouds, rainbows and more. Today's look back at the past 19 years takes us to the year 2000, when Jon Jacobson snapped a shot of the setting sun lighting the clouds over Lake Superior, with the silhouette of a couple of sky watchers.

Another common photo shared throughout the years, has been that of rainbows, like the second photo from Bob Gilreath, which first appeared on these pages back in 2004. Quite the intense color in this sky show.

Our third archive photo was snapped by Chuck Pomazal and shows a different night sky light, one that isn't caused by nature, but yet still lights the Keweenaw sky…the lighting of the Quincy Mine Shaft. It was an experiment back in 2010, by the Quincy Board, to see what it would look like lit up at night once again. Nowadays you can light it up in memory or in honor of someone for the night.

Not much can compete with the sun setting over Lake Superior though, as this photo taken by Joy Ziemnick just two nights ago illustrates so well. Viewers described her photo as outstanding, brilliant, spectacular..and that's just looking at the photo. Can you imagine seeing this in person, watching it change as the sun goes beyond the horizon?

Today's video treat is another night sky show, a time-lapse recorded in 2015 by Shawn Malone showing the Aurora Borealis that could be seen jumping in the southern skies of Marquette when the clouds parted in the night sky. Pretty amazing!

I always have to smile when I see the magic of the dancing lights. I would like to see the Southern lights also.
