There are quite a few Light Stations dotting the Lake Superior shoreline and throughout the past 19 years, we've featured more than a few. Appearing in the archives on this day, back in 2002, we had Sand Hills Lighthouse, photographed by Steve Brimm. This light is located on 5 Mile Point Road, near Allouez and is a privately owned Bed and Breakfast now.

The second lighthouse from our archives is the Manitou Island Lighthouse off the tip of the Keweenaw. Michael Keranen and friends were exploring there in 2005. In order to get there you have to have a seaworthy boat or the stamina to paddle quite a distance, as it's located approximately 3 miles from the land and we all know how unpredictable Lake Superior can be, so add in that factor, too. I'd venture to say it's one of the least visited lights in the Keweenaw.

The third lighthouse here on the Pasty Cam today, is located at White City (Jacobsville), the Keweenaw Lower Entry Light. My family was out there last week for a picnic day and my daughter-in-law, Brenda snapped this shot as we were walking out to get a closer look at the Lighthouse. In previous years, it was a challenge for teens to climb the ladders and jump into Lake Superior from high up. Nowadays, the ladders are removed, to keep folks from climbing up there so readily.

The last lighthouse here today is a video montage put together by Terry Pepper back in 2010. He accompanied a group of scientists out to this lonely reef, 25 miles from Manitou Island and photographed the light station while they worked on their meteorological equipment there. Terry said it is so isolated out there in Lake Superior's waters, that it's a bit foreboding. Sit back and let Terry take you on a tour that few have been on before.

I love lighthouses. I can't seem to get enough of
them. Saw some really cool ones at the Apostle
Islands this week. I never tire of seeing
pictures of them. Thanks!!

I especially like the Manitou light.

My husband's grandfather, Frank Kuusisto, helped to build the lower entry light and break wall. So of course this light has a special meaning to us.

Stannard Rock kind of reminds me of Alcatraz, anybody else think so??

Great video, Terry!
That's one weathered lighthouse!

Great video and pictures. In the spirit of the lighthouse topic and timeliness of the news, this is the first year of the restoration of the Rock of Ages lighthouse on the southwest end of Isle Royale. It's not as remote from "civilization" as Stanard Rock but it is very similar in its desolation. This is a multi-year effort and they are looking for support and volunteers.

Rock of Ages Lighthouse Restoration Association

Here is a very recent (3 weeks ago) report from one of the volunteers:

Eleven years later and it still looks the much the same:
