Looking back in the archives of 19 years of photos, there are days that the theme repeats throughout the years and there are days where the themes have nothing in common. That's kind of where we are today, looking back at the year 2013 on this day, Sue Uren shared the top two photos of a very unique Freighter Cottage located on the St. Mary's River near Detour. The owner transported the hull by barge, hauled it up on the beach where it now sits and then started the process of turning it into a cottage. I'd love to see photos of the completed project inside now.

This being Independence Day Eve, of course there were a number of photos of the usual celebration activities, but the one that caught my eye was from 2016, photographed in Eagle River by Frederick J. Haun in the 1950's and shared by his grandson, Paul Meier. Old photographs are such a fascinating look back into our past.

The video for today is a repeat of one Charlie shared back in 2016, also of the Eagle River Parade back then, but was well worth another look at in my opinion. Sit back and enjoy the Pasty Cam time machine traveling back to the 1950's.

I, too, would love to see the inside of that
cottage.

And I agree, that was well worth another look, if
only to hear the music. Very cute. Thanks, Mary!

And before the screaming firetrucks, cop cars and
ambulances started cruising....Way cool!

And I would LOVE to see the inside of that home!!!

No matter the size of the crowd, everybody loves a parade. Happy 3rd!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Monday, July 3, 2017 - 09:27 am:

Cool pix & video! Never knew that cottage was there, and I too would like to see inside as well.

Alex, is that you in your Cub Scout uniform leading the parade carrying the flag??? Thought I recognized you.... :=)

By Paul H. Meier (Paul) on Monday, July 3, 2017 - 11:03 am:

Its Paul Meier - not "Meyers"!

Mary says: Oops, my apologies for misspelling your last name Paul. I've corrected it in my notes, now. Sorry about that!

Here's an inside look at the 'cottage':

Thanks, Jbuck...good info.
Not me, UC...I went though the wrong door and they made me a Brownie. Then I lost my cookies at the D-Bar-A while eating a skunk cabbage sandwich on a very hot, humid Saturday afternoon.

So where's the Freighter Cottage on the St. Mary's River near Detour?

Right here, on Gaffney Point, near the north end of Sims St. ≈ 1½ miles north of "beautiful downtown" Detour Village:

But it's not a rental, it's a private cottage, so no trespassing!

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 - 03:24 am:

There is also a freighter cottage on South Bass Island (Put-in-Bay) in lake Erie. It is right next to a state park so you can get a close look at it.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 - 07:49 am:

Thanks John!!!

Here's some pictures of that one: http://www.putinbayphotos.com/freighter/freighter.htm

This is quite the trend!!

Happy Independence Day!

By LoisHart (Lhart) on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 - 09:24 am:

HEY! My name is not "EMIL"!, identified as such
in the Eagle River 50's parade video. It is I,
Lois Hart, in the Indian headdress & coyote pelt
of my grandfather's (John Rader of Eagle River
(though now I suppose considered politically
incorrect "cultural appropriation"). Behind me
(identified as "?") is my sister, Carol, carrying
another sister, Ginger, who had been crying in
that stroller, now being pushed empty behind us.
Our family archives hold a movie our grandfather
took of the same parade.

By Dan (Ermigrant) on Tuesday, July 4, 2017 - 11:42 am:

Lois,
Thanks for the ID correction for you and your sisters in the 50's video. My memory of those days is not as clear as I would like (and most of us have changed in appearance since those days). I made the video a couple of years ago for John Karvonen whose mother Rosalie (Rogers) was in poor health and wanted to see the movies which included her recently departed sister.
Are there any others labelled with a "?" who you recognize?
I will try to get corrections incorporated in the video and see if pasty cam will update it.
Sincerely,
Dan Steck

I especially like the 48-star Flag.
