If you've been following the Pasty Cam for the past 19 years, you know that we've featured innumerable photos and stories of the Mining here in the Copper Country. On this day in the archives, there were a number of photos depicting some of that history. We start with a photo taken in 2001 of the Italian Hall Memorial on Seventh Street in Calumet, photographed by our own Jonathan Hopper. He snapped it at night, which gives the arch an eerie feeling. For a bit of background on the 1913 tragedy and a look at an old photograph of the building, check out this link: Copper Country Reflections.
The next shot was snapped in 2004 by Roger Kangas, of the Osceola Mine in Calumet. This view was taken by the ponds in Swedetown, making it rather neat with the image showing up in the water. Reflections of our mining history.
Our third mining relic photo was taken in 2012, by Chad Johnson. That's the Mason Dredge on M-26, used to "dredge" the bottom of Torch Lake, where the mine had been dumping stamp sand from the copper removal process. They found that there was still a good deal of copper in the stamp sand and by dredging it from the bottom of the lake, they could extract the copper by regrinding the stamp sand. Quite a process.
In searching for an accompanying video, I came across one of the Wolverine mine in Mohawk, which I had no idea existed, let alone that it had suffered a cave-in back in 2013. This video was filmed in 2014 and highlights the work that had been done up to that point, to seal up the mine. I thought it was interesting that it was surrounded by a stamp sand hill, rather than a large pile of mine rock like many of the mine locations around the Copper Country.

Great photos, thanks all! And the video is awesome! A perspective on the mine you couldn't get any other way. Does anyone know who's playing the guitar in it?

DANG!! Did anybody else almost spill their beverage when the guitar kicked in on the video!!lol I like the licks tho!!
To me the Mason Dredge is an eyesore, and should have been removed a long time ago, just my opinion.

Where in Mohawk is the Wolverine Mine? Or is it not in Mohawk? Confusing.

Wow, that video is a real trip...pass the Dramamine, please. I was waiting for the drone to enter the cave, and I didn't get a perspective for the size until I saw the ladders inside. And I'm not sure who the guitarist is, but it could be me on my mail order, $60 dollar electric and PeeVee amp combo, back in the 70s, man.
