Nineteen years of photos on the Pasty Cam have covered all sorts of events, scenery and critters, but throughout the years we've had a number of photos featuring the freighters and sailors that make their living on the Great Lakes. Back in 2010, we featured a photo taken by Roland Burgan, of a ceremony honoring a sailor, not one that sailed on the Big Lake, but grew up on the shores of Lake Superior and joined the US Navy to serve our country during WWII. USN Seaman Third Class Gerald G. Lehman graduated from Hancock High in 1940 and immediately joined the Navy. On December 7, 1941, aboard the Battleship USS Oklahoma, he lost his life when the ship was struck by multiple torpedoes and quickly capsized, sinking in Pearl Harbor. Seaman Lehman's remains were identified 69 years later, by mitochondrial DNA found on envelope flaps of letters sent home prior to that fatal day and he was finally brought home and laid to rest at Forest Hill Cemetery in Houghton. Thank you Seaman Lehman, may you RIP.
The more common sailor features we've had on the Pasty Cam, have been those that pull into Marquette Harbor, like the Michipicoten, featured in 2013. Mike Schneider was the photographer capturing the glow of the night, at the Upper Harbor Ore Dock.
Fast forward to 2017 and we have a photo snapped by Rod Burdick recently at the same Ore Dock, showing the Lee A. Tregurtha and Tug/Barge Victory/James L. Kuber in port at the same time.
With all this talk of sailors and sailing from the past and the present, I thought it might be neat to take a look at the Life of a Sailor, a video from Tim Telep, giving us a quick glimpse of life aboard a Great Lakes Freighter. Get ready to set sail

A good conservationist, or 'poster' is not one who remembers what has been said, but says what someone else wants to remember.

Perhaps you meant conversationalist?

Charlie, sorry, you are correct. Our posters here are generally good conversationalists for sure...and many of our old friends seem to be absent of late.
