On Sunday, June 11 (click →) Puerto Rico just voted to become the 51st US state. However unlikely that is to happen any time soon, here's a challenge for you:
How would we arrange 51 stars in the blue union (canton) (vs. the alternating 5 horizontal rows of six and 4 rows of five stars in the current flag)?
At least 51 is not a prime number, but its only factors are 3 and 17, perhaps suggesting an arrangement of three rows of 17 stars or 17 rows of three? Not a particularly attractive plan.
Any other suggestions? Get creative!
Another bit of US Flag trivia (from Wikipedia):
Quote:The man credited with designing the current 50 star American flag was Robert G. Heft. He was 17 years old at the time and created the flag design in 1958 as a high school class project while living with his grandparents in Ohio. He received a B- on the project. According to Heft, his history teacher honored their agreement to change his grade to an A after his design was selected.
