The Bishop Baraga statue overlooking Keweenaw Bay between Baraga and L'Anse has often been photographed and shared on the Pasty Cam throughout the years and each time something interesting has been learned about the life of Bishop Baraga or the area. The top photo first appeared in 2008, snapped by Donna MacIntosh.
In 2014, we featured the next two photos which came from a 1900 publication by P. Chrysostomus Verwyst, O.F.M., called Life and Labors of Rt. Rev. Frederic Baraga, First Bishop of Marquette, Mich. The first one is of course an illustration of the Bishop and the second shot is page 181 from the publication, reference Bishop Baraga's observation of large blocks of ice still floating in Keweenaw Bay back in the winter/spring of 1835-36.
The current shot of the Bishop Baraga statue is another of Donna MacIntosh's photos, taken a few weeks back before the leaves popped out. There's something about the clouds and the sun just reflecting off the back of the statue that really pleases the eye.
For our video viewing pleasure, we're going back to June 7, 2014, when Charlie and Edie Hopper were driving around Keweenaw Bay and noticed the large ice floes still there in the Bay, just like Bishop Baraga's observation from that same date 178 years earlier. History often repeats itself and in this case the weather history did. Enjoy the ride along the Bay, along with Charlie and Edie's narrative.

I had forgotten about this little clip. Edie and I were on the way back from Petoskey, where she had spent more than a month with operations and treatments. We had not been home to Eagle River since the snow had melted, and we were shocked to see ice floating so close to summer.
Always in the spring Edie's allergies flared up, and I can hear it in her voice, just a little huskier. In spite of the physical challenges she was facing, she was always cheerful and excited to travel across the U.P., seeing all the familiar places we came to love during the decades we spent here together. What a privilege, happy memories.
