The Keweenaw was once referred to as the Copper Country and by many, still is. Copper Mining is what built up the region and was the livelihood of many of our parents and grandparents back in the day. Today we look back at the Quincy Smelter, in a photograph shared on the Pasty Cam by Brian Rendel back in 2014. That day we talked about the efforts of the Quincy Smelter Association to get the sight cleaned up and reclaimed as the historic gem that it is.
Brian shares another shot, looking at the complex from a different angle and with the snow and ice gone. These historic buildings are important to the mining history of the Copper Country, so it's wonderful to see them being reclaimed from the harsh ravages of so many years with no upkeep.
Preserving Our Industrial Past - The Quincy Smelter, is today's video, shared by Devin Leonarduzzi. "It highlights the hard-working people who saved the Quincy Smelter from being demolished." Enjoy our step back into the saga of Copper Mining and the Quincy Smelter.

Spring doesn't burst out all over.... It kind of sneaks in after you've given up hope. About time to validate this old pillar of wisdom!

Oddly enough, I was never involved with the Quincy Smelter Reclamation project. I was (and still am) heavily involved with the actual Quincy minesite, although these days it's more monetarily than physically.....

Last Summer I took the Quincy Smelter Tour. I was lucky enough to go on a day where I was the only guest. I received a great one on one tour. My tour guide let me dwell as long as I wanted in certain areas. She was very knowledgeable. I hope I didn't abuse her hospitality.
I will always refer to that area as the Copper Country. I recently went to New Orleans for a bowling tournament and ran into a team named simply "Copper Country". I can't tell you the excitement that brought me to see that name on the backs of bowling shirts. And lo and behold, one of them was related to one of my cousins. Small world!!!
