As noted on yesterday's Pasty Cam, it has been just over a year since another contributor to this website passed away. In fact, she was one of the site's co-creators, Edie Hopper my dear wife. Thanks for your thoughtfulness with comments on the anniversary of Edie's passing. When a chapter of one's life closes, it does take a while to adjust to the new realities. I look forward to returning to the U.P. early next month, as my wintertime visit with my Mom in Alabama concludes. It's the first winter in 30 years that I've been away, and I've missed all the digging-out, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing each day (just to pick up the mail across town :o)

As I leave Alabama, I won't miss the tornados. A near-miss last night took off a sizeable chunk of my mother's tin roof, and we had a bucket brigade, dealing with a deluge through her kitchen ceiling. There was just enough daylight to tack up a temporary cover, but for awhile there, her kitchen was flowing almost as profusely as Jacob's Falls.

Can't imagine how much your Mom has enjoyed having you there this Winter, Charlie. A blessing to her, in part because of the sacrifice you made to be there. We never know the whole impact of our choices until we look back over the years. And i'm with you, i'll take snow over tornadoes any day!

all. I can't remember the last time I was UP there
in the springtime to see Jacobs Falls running like
that. So it was fun to see the picture.

What a hard year this must have been for you. Sounds like your
being in Alabama was a real blessing for your mom. Lucky you're
so handy with impromptu fixes for things like a leaky roof. A
