Animals are a common theme throughout the past 19 years on the Pasty Cam and one of the more frequent furry friends has been dogs, both big and small. Back in 2010, we featured a Shoebox Memory from the MTU Archives showing Dr. John Nara and his purebred St. Bernard, Freckles, who was the receptionist and guardian of Dr. Nara's veterinary clinic back in the 50's. Now, that's a man-size dog!

A somewhat smaller size dog was in the spotlight in 2015, on the Ontonagon shores of Lake Superior. Frank Jezek took his four legged friend, Chinkles for a walk on their beachfront two years ago this week, where you can see there was still considerable snow and ice. The second photo of Chinkles was snapped four days later, with the ice gone so he can enjoy a refreshing dip in the Big Lake. Just goes to show you that the meltdown in the spring happens quickly here UP North.

Dogs are often referred to as "Man's best friend", but of course we all know they're a woman's best friend, too. These four legged friends bring us all much joy and laughter, too, such as today’s clip, where Nancy and Joe VanEvera's pup, Phoebe was trying out her new boots. I'm not sure what's funnier... Phoebe's wacky walk or Nancy holding back the laughter :o)

"2010: Dr. John Nara & Freckles":
As you can clearly see, minun toinen serkku¹ Jack Nara wasn't a small man.
Then there's Freckles! 😲

It seems there are two varieties of St. Bernards, "dry mouth" or "slobber mouth". I don't remember which version Freckles was, but some friends in Phoenix used to have a real "slobber mouth" St. Bernard, and Omigosh what a disaster he was in the house!

¹ minun toinen serkku = second cousin

There is actually another Finnish word for "second cousin": pikkuserkku
… which would be hilarious in reference to Jack Nara, 'cuz pikkuserkku literally means "little cousin".
Oh, and "Cousin Jack" wasn't even Cornish!
😁

Hi
In the second photo, captioned "Chinkles on Superior shore", I though perhaps chinkles was a term for those round ice chunks...they would probably make a noise like that as they sloshed around. Whatever the name, Chinkles looks like a nice dog.
