About this time of year we begin to have cabin fever in the Keweenaw. It's foggy and right around freezing this morning in Calumet, where there are Winter weather advisories today. I'm sure that many of the year-round residents could use a Spring Break. As we travel south from the Copper Country, all the way down to Escanaba we find much better weather... no fog, only cloudy skies... and all the way up to 33 degrees. I've heard some say this is the Banana Belt of the U.P.
Well, let's fast forward a few months, and see this town from the air, courtesy of U.P. Steam and Gas Engine Association. Lots of green. And you know it must be shirtsleeve weather. Edie and I were actually members of the UPSGEA for a awhile, signing up when we toured the Village at the Fairground.
For today's 20th year look-back photos, we picked Jonathan's downtown photo from 2000, and Neil Harri's 2010 picture of a flight out of Calumet (CMX). Wonder if they were headed to the Banana Belt that day?
I've loved Escanaba from the very first time I visited it. As much as I love Lake Superior, it was so great to swim in Lake Michigan where it felt so much warmer. Hopped into a boat and spent the day on, I think, Washington Island? I'm not sure if that's right or not, but ever since that summer, I was hooked on Escanaba. So many wonderful towns in Michigan's Upper Peninsula!!

congratulations to north central powers jets boys basketball team for winning the (3-peat) title in the state tournament (who was nearly upset by dollar bay in the regional phase of the tournament) and extended their michigan state record to 83 consecutive game wins.
