This time of year, a look back in the archives can be confusing for folks that aren't aware of the drastic weather changes we have in March here in the North Country. One year Lake Superior may be still iced in on the shore, other years the beachsand and rocks have already emerged and are shrouded by a fog from the warm and cold together. Our first archive photo from 2000, illustrates that last description perfectly. It almost looks like it could be a summer day, but you can just see the white still hanging on along the water's edge.

Speed ahead to 2008 and there's no mistaking the ice still covering Lake Superior as the sunset creates a dramatic sundog and reflection on a cold spring evening. Greta Jones captured that one for us.

Then in 2010, we're back to bare beach with just a small remainder of ice at the water line, as Amy Cloutier and her four-legged friend enjoyed the Eagle River beach with no one else in sight.

If you're a cross country skiing enthusiast, you'll like today's video look at a group of Keweenaw skiers zipping along the still icy shores of Lake Superior in the spring. Sometimes, the weather just can't make up its mind here UP North.

Love the video! Here in the Muskegon area, we get
the same shoreline conditions as shown in the
video, with that nice smooth area between the
shoreline ice rubble and the ice ridges offshore.
Great fun to XC ski on, just like the video shows.
A couple of years ago, there were some folks out
there on alpine skis and snowboards, using
kiteboard kites for power.

Never mind Mother Superior, that's "little" Houghton Lake. (Although it is the largest inland lake in the state of Michigan, and one of the largest natural inland lakes in the United States.):
