Lake Superior and her shoreline have been one of the subjects that has garnered many photographs here on the Pasty Cam in the previous 19 years. Each one unique and interesting in their own way, as the Big Lake wears many faces.

Back in 2013, Chad Johnson was out at Bucky's (a.k.a. Calumet Waterworks Park) checking out the ice coverage on Lake Superior's shoreline there. The sunshine that day gave hope that spring was on the way and the beach would soon begin to appear again.

Sue Haralson was making a winter shoreline visit that day, too, eleven years earlier in 2002. She was on the opposite shore, over near Big Traverse and it looked to be a snowier day with amazing artwork in the swirling drift Mother Nature created.

Both of these shots from the archives show the quieter side of shoreline, while today's video clip brings you the sounds and action when the wind is working Superior into a frenzy. The only thing missing is the spray from the waves!

Great pictures and video! How wonderful it was to
wake up listening to the sounds of the lake.
Thanks!!

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, March 6, 2017 - 08:47 am:

I love that sound too, Deb...but I have a friend
who lives on the lake in the Keweenaw, and she
said sometimes it's so loud..she can't sleep!!!

I think I'd be okay with that :o)

Looking at the other pictures for this day, the fire in 2003 caught my eye. In going back to read the posts that day i found this touching note from Bob Gilreath:

By Bob Gilreath on Thursday, March 6, 2003 - 10:02 am:

What some of your out of town readers won't realize from looking at just these pictures is that we were already fighting another structure in Lake Linden when this call came in.

Look at John Dee's journal section at johndee.com to get the whole story of the day.

We responded to the first call around 7 am at -29 degrees. It hurt just to breath let alone fight a fire.

I publicly wish to thank all the people from the community (entire copper country) who came and provided us with food and hot drinks at both fires all day. Without them we never could have kept going.

McDonalds, Burger King, Loading Zone, Lindells, Red Cross, all the departments spouses etc. These come to mind immediately and I apologize for those who I didn't name, but the sentiment is the same, THANK YOU.

I'm still sore all over and don't want to see another day like that ever again.

Interesting comments from Bob G., Jbuck.
A local newsman, Ron Savage, at FOX-2 news-Detroit just recently passed away. He was also a very respected volunteer firefighter with the City of Milford, MI perhaps Bob G. heard about it.

Wow, Ron Savage sounded like a great guy ~ and will be greatly missed by the community. Sorry to read of his passing; we need more folks like him. Thanks for sharing this, Alex.

Great pix & video!!

Yesterday was great too! But I'm quite certain an uncased gun on a snowmobile would be viewed as a no no, and illegal, and if it's not a nice and comfortable 4x4 truck, forget it! lol :=)) The ol hips can't take a snowmobile any longer!!

Yes, Ron Savage was terrific for all of the Detroit Metro area, he will be missed for sure!! R.I.P. Ron!! I am very sad for his wife and 15 year old son!! No one 15 years old should have to have their world turned upside down like that, and I'm speaking from personal experience. If I run into that young man, I'll tell him... only time will heal his pain, and memories will let you smile again one day, count on it!! Milford is only a few miles from my home. I'm sure they have the communities support as well!

I will never forget that day/fire...it was cold
and I was walking on main street, to see what was
burning. The owner of the home ran out of his
business...saw it was his home, looked at me just
so shocked...never saw such eyes in my life...God
Bless EVERYONE involved with that~!! Talk about
heart stopping. wow.

And likewise, I will never forget the many fires during my six years at da Tech that destroyed the beautiful old Kerridge Theatre

Kerridge1

Kerridge2

Kerridge0

… in spite of the valiant efforts of the local volunteer firefighters! Also those fires that destroyed nearly whole blocks of beautiful downtown Houghton and Hancock in severe winter fire fighting conditions, again in spite of the valiant efforts of the local volunteer firefighters!

Oops, I forgot; here, from (click →) Copper Country Reflections, is a color picture of ye olde (click →) Kerridge Theatre and the old Scott Hotel¹ (looking west on Quincy Street) the Kerridge theater is the second picture on the page.

¹Beginning in 2006, the former Scott Hotel underwent a $4.2 million renovation to create 28 apartment units for low-income seniors. The renovation was completed and the apartments opened for occupancy in December 2007.
