Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 - 12:04 am:

We say goodbye to February, so we can welcome in March. As we do this, we also say goodbye to our loved ones and friends that have gone on before us. Today we remember:

Isabelle DeLisle
William "Bill" Drott
Irene Kokko
Sharon Powers
Reuben Rheault
Judy Rota
Servicemen and women who have given their all

All of us here at Pasty Central extend our deepest sympathy to those who have lost someone near and dear to them. We invite you to add the names of those you'd also like to remember on this page.

Special thanks to Sue and Brad Uren, who supplied us with today's peaceful Sedar Bay sunset in memory of their mother and grandmother (respectively). May all the departed rest in peace.

On Valentines Day we lost our 33 1/2 year old
Quarter Horse mare Tia. Tia was the last of our
daughter's three show horses. Tia was in our
family for 22 years, in those years she took our
daughter to the winners circle many many times.
Tia leaves us with so many wonderful and loving
memories deep in our hearts. A horse crazy girls
dream horse.

So sorry for the loss of your horse, Janie. It's
always so hard to lose a pet, and after 22 years, it
really hurts.

Condolences to everybody who lost a loved one this
month. Thankfully, we haven't lost anybody. But,
as always, thinking of those who have gone on before
us.

¹But note the Travel Channel listing:

Quote:

Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern
(Season 16, episode 5, 1 hr)
"Great Lakes"
New, 2/28/2017, Travel, Adventure, Cooking
Andrew Zimmern learns about the cuisine of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, which includes pork shoulder cooked underground, hearty pastries [sic] and whitefish taken from Lake Superior, which is the largest of the Great Lakes of North America.

Pastries????
And no, they're not talking about Nisu/Pulla/Sweet Rolls, etc!
When will they ever learn!
😠

mickill mouse (Ram4):
"He, from Bizarre Foods², should have tried squeaky cheese, too …"

To my utter and complete surprise I have found "squeaky cheese"…
(click →) Leipäjuusto at both Trader Joe's and Sprouts Farmers Market in Phoenix, AZ of all places!

It was actually quite good, but ridiculously priced, at somewhere well over $5.00 for a deck-of-cards size/shaped chunk of cheese!? Eeeek!
😞

² Zimmern has been to Finland, too,
See (click →) Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern, Season 6, episode 5 (originally aired on June7, 2011) eating stranger things than Leipäjuusto on Hailuoto island (near Oulu) in particular.

This episode is up for re-run during March. (It'll be on at 7PM on March 7 on Cox Cable in Phoenix, for example, followed by a repeat of the "Great Lakes" episode at 9PM.)

FRNash: They also have squeaky cheese at www.upfoods.com, they are, I believe, on Bootjack Rd. The website says they are closed til May 1st. That is where I got the cheese from when I first tried it.

And so they are (click →) U.P. Foods, and the Sarazins are nice folks, too.

After May 1st I may just have to order some (click →) Justoa,¹
… and some of their "100% Pure Maple Syrup from Michigan's Copper Country" — since the Nara Sugar Camp is long gone. 😔
… plus several jars of jams/preserves — jellies, not so much — from them (I've given up with that "Jam Lady" 😡).
¹ Technically "Justoa" as they call it just means cheese, while Leipäjuusto ("Bread cheese") is really the correct term for "squeaky cheese".

Bizarre Foods was AWESOME tonight! And YES...get
some Sarazin food...you can't go wrong!

By Doug Walters (Dawalters) on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 - 11:25 pm:

Donna, yes it was a great episode. They could have went a bit
further north and stopped by the Jampot, but at least thimble
berries were mentioned. I'm being too picky. They could have
done two hours and I would still be wanting more.

"Donna, yes it was a great episode."

I thought so too.

Most importantly to me, Zimmern really seemed to understand and appreciate the unique "Yooper" character (strong moral and ethical qualities):

Quote:

char·ac·ter (kăr′ək-tər)
noun
1. a. The combination of mental characteristics and behavior that
        distinguishes a person or group.
    b. The distinguishing nature of something.
2. a. Moral strength; integrity.

[With that, I can almost forgive his butchery of Finnish: e.g. sisu: "see-sue", etc. <Gack!> At least he understood the concept, if not the pronunciation!]

It was also quite a strong promotional piece for da UP, tho' at some risk. As one of the participants said (approximately):

Quote:

"If all of the people who wanted to live here lived here, no-one would want to live here."
