Suzanne Houle was on her way from Hancock, over to Houghton to run some errands last week when we experienced those unseasonably warm temperatures and she snapped a few unusual shots for January in the Keweenaw.

Her first photo takes us down South Lincoln Drive in Hancock, with the unusual phenomenon of "bare roads" in the midst of winter. It was actually a nice reprieve from the white knuckle driving on the icy roads we're used to this time of year.

The next three shots were snapped from the Houghton side of the Portage Lift Bridge, showing the strange fog that was hanging over the hills of Hancock, along with the puddles of melted ice sitting on top the surface of the frozen Portage Canal. Hopefully snowmobilers know it is not safe to cross the ice here.

Of course this week is a whole other ball game, as the temps are back in the teens again, plus we've had more snow to cover the roads and make everything white again. We knew it would return, because here UP North, winter doesn't end until the last snowflake falls.

Thanks for some rare views of Hancock!

about a week or so ago I was looking at the liftbridge from the mtu webcams. All you saw was the top of the towers through the clouds. In the distance you saw the top of the school building. It was strange, like, they were peaking thru the fog and the fog formed a circle, if you will, around the towers of the bridge, as the (fog) hid everything else from sight. Strange looking sight to see.

I wish I could have gone down there and taken a few pictures.

I like the pictures of the fog and the melting ice. Winter was being tested and winter won out for another month and a half or so. Thanks for sharing.

Ominous pix! I remember a song or poem that has the phrase "Shrouded hills" in it, but I can't recall where. :-(

It looks a bit eerie. Very interesting pics!
