When Joy Ziemnick headed to McLain Park to check out the ice situation on the shores of Lake Superior, she was not alone. There were a number of other folks there exploring the icy expanse.
Captured through the lens of Joy's camera, we get a pictorial report from the shoreline along the State Park, including views of the Lighthouse, a seaplane flying over and people just out there enjoying the sunshine and ice. Look closely at the fourth photo and you can even see someone out there doing a handstand.
I found it interesting that in several of the photos, the ice seems to be out as far as the eye can see, yet in another, there is open water with what looks like ice again out further on the Big Lake. Of them all though, I think my favorites in Joy's selection here today, are the close-up shots of the ice. The second photo with the ice looking like frozen bubbles and the last one giving the impression that Lake Superior is baring her wintery fangs. Another of the many faces of this beautiful Great Lake!

Very cool, indeed! Do I see someone doing a headstand in the "Icy vastness" photo?
Mary says: Yes, yes you do, Alex. I mentioned that in my notes, too! :-)

Those pictures are ample evidence that winter is here. Great pictures but all those people on the ice give me the willies. I don't even like to cross the ice at Dee Stadium.

Hi It looks like the people in the first photo have on snowshoes. Spreading out your weight could help if the ice is a bit thin.
These are beautiful pictures, but I wouldn't go where the folks in these pictures are walking. Hopefully they know the area and the conditions.

Indeed Alex. Looks like they are doing a handstand. #4 reminds me quite a bit of Death Valley but all in white.
Nice photos, I would not walk out there for all the pasties in the U.P., I know she'd give way!! lol
