This past Thursday was a beautiful sunny day in the Keweenaw. Something we hadn't seen for awhile, so on my way home from work, I snapped a few photos of the snow in the Calumet/Laurium area of the unbelievable narrowing of streets and high snowbanks.

The first two photos were taken on Elm St. in Calumet. The row of houses is directly across from the CLK Public Schools Football field and the second photo is just down the road from there at the next intersection near Ace Hardware. We've been getting hit with so much snow (this week's official update will be over 13 feet, or 156+ inches), the village crews haven't had time to get to the side streets to get them widened, so this one is just about one lane now.

Taking a left turn on to 6th Street, the next photo is the Houghton County Road Commission snowblower cutting back the snowbanks to widen the road. Just across the road from the snowblower photo, is an incredible amount of snow hanging over the Subway roof, so far down that it's almost touching the snowbank against the building.

From there I had to go down Mine St. where the snowbank has been pushed so high that it towers over my full size 4X4 pickup truck. And again note the narrow road here, making it almost impossible for two cars to pass by each other at the same time.

The last photo was snapped in Laurium, looking down Lake Linden Ave., which is also M26. The vehicle coming toward me is a full size pickup truck also and seems a bit dwarfed by the snowbanks on either side of it. If the snow-making machine can just let up for a few days, the village crews will be able to get to all the streets with their snowgo and dump trucks to haul some of this away, making room for more.

Amazing amount of snow ~ hope they bring out the snow-go and pare down those banks!

Will this be the year a new record for snow is set?

That's more snow than I care to see in one place. Sure been a white winter in the Keewenaw.

That's such a lot of snow. We were looking at
snowfalls this weekend, and we read that Houghton
Co. was up to 175" in spots. Unbelievable!! Makes

Ah! The old days are here again. I lived on Elm Street for 21 years. I remember many days and years like the pictures. Many years over 300 inches. I lived near the corner of 10th street and had a snow ramp all the way to our back yard.
A driveway for 4 cars one year. Whew! Now its 80 degrees here in Florida.
