Almost exactly 16 years ago on the Pasty Cam, Josh Stone immortalized Paul Roberts’ graceful dismount after a hard day’s work on a snow-covered U.P. roof. If the device in today’s featured video had been available, Paul could have acheived the desired results in a fraction of the time, with his boots on terra firma (or perhaps terra ninguo?) and with less risk to life and limb.

Over 10 feet of snow has fallen so far this winter across some areas of the U.P., like Copper Harbor and much of the Keweenaw. The Pasty Cam will begin year #20 on March 1, but the very first picture we published on the web in early 1995 was the Snow Thermometer on US-41 north of Mohawk. Will this be the year we see that magic number exceed 400 inches?? Stay tuned!

That new roof rake is AWESOME! Where can I purchase one?

I borrowed a roof rake with slide from a friend after
a 90 inch snowfall in 2001. It worked very well until
suddenly the whole roofload of snow gave way. It
knocked me backwards and buried me up to my
shoulders, tearing muscles in my lower back, but at
least the roof was clear. After that I hired people
to clear my roof.

OK so just where do we find such an animal. The snow is getting deeper. The little bit of voice on the video has an accent. But not a Yooper one.

Oh my!!! My husband guessed 403 inches in one of
the guessing contests. We shall see!!

The best snow removal tool we found was a sledge hammer...... and now for the rest of the story!

We had a pole building in lower Michigan with a Teflon-coated metal roof. When the snow got deep enough, we would hit the "poles" with the hammer which knocked the snow right off the roof. Of course, this method doesn't work too well on a house, but those that had metal roofs on their houses never had a lot of snow on them either.
