Christi Schmitt and her Mom, Mary made the winter trek to get a look at the Hungarian Falls this time of year. Not only do you get to enjoy the iced UP falls, but the view from the elevation of the area around the falls is outstanding, also. That's Christi's first photo, looking out at Torch Lake and the Bootjack area in the distance.

Then we go on the snow-covered trail to the falls and get a look back down at the Dover Creek, still running and open in places, which is actually the water source that feeds the Hungarian Falls. The fourth photo shows the falls all iced up with a layer of snow dusting the icy mass, but upon closer inspection, you can see the water is running behind that wall of ice, through a small opening in the middle. Christi shot a short video so we get to experince the sound and see the water rushing behind the frozen falls. Just click on the arrow and enjoy!

When I was a kid living in Tamarack Mills, I made many trips up to the Hungarian Falls and swam in the dam waters upstream of the falls. I took a pic of Torch Lake just like the one here today. Don't know if I could find it any more, but I recognized the shot right away. I took other ones from the middle of the railroad trestle, too. Those falls are very impressive in the Spring runoff.

Great hike and shots. If you've got connections
(in other words, a key to the gate) you can drive
to the upper falls and pond.

This would also be a great time of year to visit
the Natural Wall. During the summer it's difficult
to observe with all the leaves. In the spring,
before leaf out (and before the flies come out)
might be the best time.
